Deception in Reporting Hot European Weather

Timothy Birdnow

When the weather gets cold the Gang Green, those climate alarmists who warn the sky is falling and we're all going to die from Global Warming - say "weather is not climate" but when it gets hot they tell us weather IS climatethis story illustrates that point perfectly.

Europe is in its early stage of summer but is in the middle of an intense heatwave and scientists say it's a preview of what climate change has in store.

Meteorologists are blaming a blast of torrid air from the Sahara for the unusually early summer heatwave in Europe, which could send thermometers up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Authorities have issued warnings against dehydration and heatstroke, and environmental experts warn it's a glimpse of what a climate-changing future could look like.

German professor Stefan Rahmstorf said heatwaves were on the rise for Europe.

"Monthly heat records all over the globe occur five times as often today as they would in a stable climate," he said.

First, it is understandable that we are breaking meteorological records all the time; there wasn't such a thing as meteorology, not in the way we know it, until the last couple of centuries. Prior to that people observed the weather by eyeball, primarily. And we certainly didn't have worldwide records that were meticulously kept. We had no idea what "planetary temperatures" were. Most of our data go back to the twentieth century, and in particular after 1979, when we began tracking the data using satellites. Oh, and computers didn't hurt, either.

I suppose irony is lost on these people. The article further states:

"It's unprecedented because it's hitting so early in June, we haven't seen this since 1947," said Emmanuel Demael, a forecaster at the Meteo-France weather agency.

So it was just as bad in 1917 - well before the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide - as now. Don't these writers see contradiction?

Second, if these people would bother to research the matter, they would know that the Arctic was warmer than usual in the Barents Sea because of low pressure zones (aka the dreaded "Polar Vortex"), and this low pressure region above Russia would encourage air flow from down south - which means hot African air would naturally move across Europe. This is a normal variable, part of the weather cycle. It has nothing to do with Global Warming as we know it.

I wrote about it here back in back in mid April.

If I might recycle the excerpt from the National Snow and Ice Data Center i used back then:

Overall, Arctic weather in March featured low pressure and above average temperatures. Two low pressure centers at sea level, one over the Bering Sea and the other over the Barents Sea, dominated the atmospheric circulation pattern. Low pressure over the Barents Sea brought cloudy and cool conditions to the immediate region, but also funneled warm air into the central Arctic Ocean. Air temperatures at the 925 mb level (about 2500 feet above sea level) were above average over most of the Arctic region, with the exception in the Atlantic sector of the Arctic Ocean. Temperatures were far above average, locally exceeding 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit), over the Beaufort Sea, northeast Alaska, and northwest Canada.

The pattern of overall low pressure across the Arctic in March was manifested as a persistent positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation (AO), a pattern that started during the second week of February. A positive AO in winter has in the past favored low September ice extent. This is in part due to a wind pattern tending to advect older, thicker ice out of the Arctic through the Fram Strait. The wind pattern associated with the positive AO also tends to pull ice away from the Siberian coast, resulting in thinner ice in the region that readily melts out during summer. However, with the overall thinning of the Arctic ice cover, the relationship between winter AO phase and September sea ice extent is not as clear as it used to be.

End excerpt.

These low pressure conditions continue through June, although a high pressure system has parked itself over Alaska.

This is a result of a phase shift to the Arctic Oscillation - a normal, natural occurrence. When you have low pressure you are going to have warm air move into the region from down south. That is why the ice melted in the Arctic in the way it did, moving straight up to the Barents (a shallow body of water); it was being warmed by southern winds.. If those winds were warm enough to melt sea ice, what do you think they will do in Europe?

Actually, a large high pressure system has developed over Alaska, leading to an even lower pressure system over Eurasia - the kind of thing that brings hot air up from the tropics.

From Weather Underground

The latest GFS model forecast suggests that the Arctic high will drift to a location a few hundred miles north of Alaska by mid-June and remain strong. This position and strength is characteristic of the Arctic dipole anomaly, which features unusually high pressure over the Arctic Ocean north of North America and unusually low pressure over northeastern Eurasia. This pattern brings in warm southerly winds along the shores of the East Siberian and Chukchi seas, which favors strong ice melt in these sectors and pushes the ice away from the coast, leaving open water. The pressure pattern also causes loss of Arctic sea ice due to winds that transport ice out of the Arctic Ocean and into the North Atlantic through Fram Strait, to the east of Greenland

End excerpt.

This has nothing to do with carbon dioxide warming the atmosphere.

Finally, given that NOAA and other such agencies have been caught repeatedly fudging temperature data, does anyone really believe this is "the hottest summer ever" in Europe? Anyone?:

Does anybody think it odd that you cannot get a single story out of the mainstream media that points any of this out? Why is it left to me and other bloggers to write about this?

UPDATE:  Tony Heller does a fine job of explaining how NOAA and NASA's Goddard Institute have altered historical temperature data.

1 Reading between the lines, or something like that, I suspect that it only FEELS hotter in Europe because of all the furor about "renewable energy." If they're relying on windmills and solar panels to run their air conditioning, they're getting only half efficiency out of those units, and sweating up a storm (geez, can you imagine being in France now?). Naturally, they can't admit to the real source of the problem!

2 An excellent point, Dana!  Yeah; the French don't like deodorant that much as it is. Pe-YEW!
