Failure to Launch

People naturally assume that I am opposed to "energy transition". I am not, and occasionally find myself having to explain this.
Here for the record, is probably my 100th attempt to clarify where I stand:

"I'm not opposed to energy transition.
But, how about this? How about first making the transition to new technologies as they become economically competitive? Building a resilient grid scale network of such technologies, whilst only moth-balling old-school generating capacity as that capacity is clearly rendered obselete by its replacement.

That, is not what we have done, and certainly not what the Germans have done.

I have been following this topic closely for over two decades.

I am shocked at the blind idiocy of what I have witnessed.
There was at all points a menu of options. We could have optimized both the economic and environmental achievements by choosing those items on the menu that provided the maximum utility at the lowest cost.

But, we followed the Merkel, "feed-in-tariff

" model, where we granted the maximum subsidy support for the most economically inefficient options.

So, at every turn we picked out the most expensive item on the menu.

Combine that with the bizarre commitment by the Europeans to maximize their reliance on Putin's gas - and I was expecting either - crazy high prices, or total disaster.
We may well have ticked off both of those achievements by the end of the year."

Always those who believe in Green Energy go back to the Manhattan Project, or the Moon landing, and say if we spend enough and make it so it's cheaper than "fossil fuels" than we can transition. But that is a false analogy. The Manhattan Project was an effort to do one very specific thing - create a weapon based on new science. It was limited in scope as to it's mission, and it was based on science that had just come to light.

Green energy is different. It is an attempt to simply improve existing technology which may well be as good as it can get at this point, and it is an attempt to force it into the general economy.

Nuclear weapons were never forced onto the market with the purpose of the general public buying them and using them. They could remain prohibitavely expensive (in fact, that was a blessing as it kept them out of the hands of criminals and terrorists).

Ditto the Moon landing which was based on well established physics and was merely about developing new hardware. It cost massive amounts of money, too, which is why we don't have people vacationing on the Moon today.

Again, it had a very specific goal.

Neither of these projects aimed at fundamentally transforming our national economy or moving people to use the technology. They were single-minded. We already HAVE EV's and the like - the problem is they aren't that safe or effective. Until they reach parity with their gasoline cousins they won't be in high demand.

And considering they really solve nothing in terms of the environment (they are dirty to produce and require generating electricity to charge) and since they put us at the mercy of China and other international competitors of dubious character as we have to get rare earth metals from them, there still is no real market for these things. The market is primarily virtue signaling wealthy people and the artificial market of subsidized pricing.

And as we run up against a wall in terms of the physics of these - their ability to hold charges, to charge quickly, etc. one must ask why the mad rush to promote them at this point. It is clear these are being pushed by the government and for purposes that benefit government. If the demand were there western governments wouldn't have to try to get the price of gasoline up.

Rumors of the Death of the Big Bang Greatly Exaggerated

Big Bang is now seriously questioned by JWST findings. "Panic" has set in among some cosmologists and astronomers. The red shift is not proportional to distance. Detailed explanation in video.

I'm skeptical. The atheists in the scientific community have always despised the Big Bang because it postulates a beginning of the universe and follows closely to the descriptions given in the Book of Genesis and that is a major embarassment for the idea that the universe is nothing but a self-contained entity that does not need a creator.

And current thinking says the universe started expanding before the Big Bang - which comports perfectly with Genesis "God created the Heavens and the Earth. And the Earth was malformed, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the Deep...then God said "Let there be light!"

I can also pick at the reasoning employed by those promoting this theory. For one thing, we don't know the composition of anything but what is in stars we can see. We have no way of doing anything but take a guess at the rest of it. And if much of the matter in the universe is tied up in dark matter? What it suggests is that we don't know everything.

But that doesn't mean the theory is wrong.

They also say the more distant stars should be dimming if we are in an expanding universe. Well, how does anyone know if they are? Definitionally we arent seeing it because we can't. We live in a specific point in time and space and have no way of knowing if the stars have dimmed over eons, much less centuries. Our measurements are only quite recent.

Actually, the brightness of distant stars and galaxies has been used in thhe past as evidence of an expanding universe; the collection of light from all over should make the sky glow, and even the dust clouds and nebulae should phosphoresce. That they aren't has been attributed to the fact the universe is expanding (I read about that in a book by George Gamow, father of the Big Bang theory, )

We do know there is the 3* background radiation, which comports with the theory.I think rumors of the death of the Big Bang are greatly exaggerated.

This still suggests something quite odd, probably having to do with spacetime distortions. In my mind it still doesn't say the universe isnt expanding; why wouldn't we see this behavior closer to home?

Perhaps those portions of the universe "stretched" more quickly than our has. Time may have moved at a faster rate there. For that matter time may be moving at a faster rate or slower rate in other places in general. We know a large enough mass can do that, and a planet on the edge of a black hole would see time dilation. (Although tidal forces would rip it to shreds long before you could notice it. - take that movie Interstellar!)

Scientists always are looking for symmetry in everything, but who says the universe is symmetrical? At any rate, color me skeptical about this.

Yes, it is disturbing, but I don't think this is the smoking gun some believe it to be. Or we may be wrong in our estimates on how far away they are. We don't have cepheid variables to check the disttnce and obviously parlax is out of the question for determining the distance. We measure the distance to galaxies with surface brightness fluctuation and color. But what if the light between here and there is distorted by, say, dust or a huge dark mass? We might think these galaxies are farther than they are. Or the new telescope may just be wonky. This is all just speculation now, largely untested, and there are multiple reasons why this could be appearing as it is. I don't think it disproves the Big Bang even if we accept the data as accurate. It just shows that Shakespeare was right; there ARE more things on Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in Horatio's philosophy and cosmologists static thinking.

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the attacks n the United States, starting with the World Trade Center and then the Pentagon.

On that day our nation truly had it's finest hour, setting aside all the hatred and acrimony and coming together in unity behind our bretheren.

And our emergency people (I never liked the term "first responders") were beyond magnificent, risking their lives - and many dying - to rescue the victims of those horrible crimes.

It was perhaps our finest hour. It is a shame it didn't last and that now we are in the throes of strife, anger, and hatred for our country. If our country was so bad we would never have seen the heroism and decency we did that day. It's the very heart and sould of America, or used to be.

We honored and respected our people and our nation. I wish that were true today.

MLB on the Road to Ruin

They are all intended to ramp up the scoring and will remove much of the strategy of the game.

 The changes include a pitch clock - to make pitchers throw faster and thus allow batters a greater chance of getting a hit, "defensive shift changes" in the field are now outlawed (moving fielders around), the bases will be bigger (making it easier to get on) and closer together, and pitchers will only be given two pickoff attempts per at bat. Oh, and a team will be allowed to bring a pitcher back in the game if the bullpen is exhausted.

The players opposed the changes. But MLB wants the big scores and wants to limit the length of games (and thus save money) so it's becoming a reality.

All sports keep pushing for high scoring. Yes, that is exciting, but it takes the strategy out of the game in almost every sport. Basketball has NO strategy any longer once they implemented rules that protected the high scorers. And football has been following that path too. You can't make incidental contact on a passing play any longer, or hit someone too hard.

It's all part of the pacification of sports. But baseball was always a pretty passive game. However, there were a few spills when sliding into base. Now, with a larger base, that will happen less.

I tire of the powers that be always monkeying with something that isn't broken.

Just in case somebody tries to tell you that 2022 is the "worst drought ever," it is actually the 18th driest ever for California.

Today the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released the statewide tabulations for average August rainfall. NOAA keeps the official precipitation records, which began in 1895.

For months that have already happened, there are 127 years of data. For months that are upcoming in 2022, there are 126 years of data. These numbers will become part of the historical record for future tracking and comparisons. As a reminder, water years begin on October 1, and end on September 30 of the next year.

So far, the first 11 months of the 2022 water year are the 109th wettest out of 127 water years, or the 18th driest of 127. NOT the first, the second, the third...but the 18th.

Using this 11-month span and comparing it to the previous 11-month spans on record, 65 times this span has been drier than the mean, and 62 times this span has been wetter than the mean.

Put another way, 51% of the time these first 11 months of our water year were drier than average, and 49% of the time these first 11 months were wetter than average.

Out of the 127 years on record, here are how the first 11 months of the current 2022 water year ranked individually.

1 is the driest, and 127 is the wettest:

October 2021 - 124 (extremely wet)
November 2021 - 21
December 2021 - 110 (extremely wet)
January 2022 - 2 (extremely dry)
February 2022 - 2 (extremely dry)
March 2022 - 13
April 2022 - 73
May 2022 - 22
June 2022 - 90
July 2022 - 60
August 2022 - 111 (extremely wet for August)

When you hear declarations like, "This is the driest year on record!", even without looking at the figures you will know that is false. There is still one more month left in the current water year that hasn't happened yet. Comparing a few months of a water year, to complete 12-month water years, is simply fake news. It also looks like Hurricane Kay is going to bring us some good September rains now through the weekend.

Even by randomly selecting certain dry months out of a water year, as has been done ad nauseam with January, February, and March, we still cannot make the claim we are having a record dry year, any more than we can randomly select the wet months of October, November, and December and claim we are having a record wet year.

As a final note, the earth is 4.5 billion years old. There have been 35,433,070 (35.4 million) spans of 127 years. In other words, the 127-year precipitation record is merely a micro-dot in time.

Yes, Biden Ordered the Raid

The judge who granted Trump's motion for a Special Master VERIFIED that it was indeed BIDEN who requested the FBI raid.
Biden and his entire staff have lied. (Pg. 2 of her ruling)
He not only knew of the raid but signed off on it.
So says the Judge, a Democrat by the way.

Biden had previously denied any prior knowledge about the raid.

The Judge disagrees:

"…with "provid[ing] the FBI access to the records in question, as requested by the incumbent President, beginning as early as Thursday, May 12, 2022”

So Biden knew this was coming if he wasn't aware of the specifics.

Chinese Tampered with U.S. Vote?

DOJ concealing Chinese vote tampering?

Konnech, which is based out of East Lansing, Michigan, builds software to managethe poll workers, poll locations, campaigns, assets, and supplies necessary to run elections in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

In January 2021, Phillips said that the cyber analyst he had been working with encountered an "oddity in some of the URLs” such as vote4la.com, vote4detroit.com, and vote4boston.com, which Konnech’s "PollChief” software application used to gather personally-identifying information about poll workers.

Using Binary Edge, a software product companies use to identify and assess the risk of cyber breaches, "We began to look at where do these URLs actually resolve to. We found that most of them resolve to one IP address and that IP address — the URL resolved in China,” Phillips said.

"What we also learned in our review, apps.konnech.com [.net], resolved into this same URL in China, meaning that the application itself was residing in China,” he continued.

"In Binary Edge, you can figure out what type of database they are using, their database port, and all the different services offered by ports in this particular application living in China. It turned out that not only did it live there, but they left the database open.”

This database "stored the personally identifying information of over a million Americans,” he emphasized.

Engelbrecht and Phillips decided that "this was a major national security risk” and immediately took the information to the FBI.

Who Leaked?

Gotta love how Trump gets approval for a 'Special Master' to look into the Mar-a-Lago raid and what the FBI took, and among the reasons given was how the FBI and DoJ could leak to the media.

And just like that the DoJ leaks all kinds of unverifiable rumours to WaPo, the lefty mouthpiece rag that has been at the forefront of attacks on conservatives and Trump.

""In addition to being deprived of potentially significant personal documents, which alone creates a real harm, Plaintiff faces an unquantifiable potential harm by way of improper disclosure of sensitive information to the public,” Judge Aileen Cannon wrote."

So the DoJ, who prior to the judge's decision, had been uncharacteristi cally quiet about the raid, promptly leaked as much damage as they could about Trump, totally ignoring that as PotUS he actually declassified the docs he had and he was the ONLY person who could do so. Even the alphabet agencies would have to run declass past the PotUS.

But Hillary, with her 30,000 emails and untold classified docs and data stored on a server known to have been asccessed by foreign actors, never got a raid and defied subpoenas by destroying emails, hard drives and phones - with NO charges at all.

And it seems a stupid thing to do, to rub peoples faces in the bias and use of Federal agencies as personal and partisan Gestapo right before their mid-term elections.

Even Dem voters are reacting against the totalitarian tactics.

I'm thinking when the Reps take over in November, they now have another reason to impeach someone - and criminal charges for Contempt of Court. The leak came AFTER the judge ruled as near as I can tell so someone in FBI or DoJ deliberately acted against the ruling.

And if the FBI cant figure out who leaked, what does that say about them Mark? They are supposed to be this great investigative agency but can't figure out who is leaking in their own ranks.

Recently, the Baltic Dry Index, which measures shipping costs around the world, reached its lowest level since June 2020.

It is hard to know why the shipping costs are down. Possibly, businesses have reduced inventories because interest rates are affecting them. It can be that as a result of COVID, China's shipping to other countries has decreased.

Stretched Past the Elastic Limit

Ayn Rand talks about the Law of Identity. A=A. A thing has a specific identity and you can’t change it by wishing it weren’t so. But Ayn seems to have neglected this idea a bit when considering human beings.

Every human being has a very specific and very complex identity, made up of his DNA and education. We have different talents, different likes and dislikes. We have different parents, a different culture, a different education which begins as soon as we are born.

Therefore, everyone has their own unique point of view, based upon all these complex factors. We cannot change a human being any more than we can change a chemical compound merely by wishing.

Therefore, it is more rational to adapt your own personal identity to the reality of the many various identities you have around you. Find people with whom you share things in common. Leave those people to their own devices when they do not interest you. Don’t bang your head against the wall of reality by trying to change people from who they are to agree with you. Find people you like as they are.

Tim adds:

It's why it's up to the individual to find where he or she fits in, not for society to change to accomodate the individual. What is a society? A collection of people holding things - culture and tradition and history - in common. How do you create or maintain a society which is predicated on the idea that the individual gets to do or be whatever he or she chooses and the society must comply with that?

It's impossible. In the end so elastic of a society stretches past it's limits and snaps.
