The war in
Ukraine has severely hobbled shipping in the Black Sea, with broad
consequences for international transport and global supply chains.
Dozens of cargo ships are stranded at the Ukrainian port of Mykolaiv,
shipping trackers said. An estimated 3,500 sailors have been stuck on
some 200 ships at Ukrainian ports. More ships are stranded around the
globe than at any point since World War II. The result is a shutdown of
the world’s second-largest grain exporting region. Ukraine accounts for
16% of global corn exports, and together with Russia, 30% of wheat
exports. Global wheat prices have jumped more than 55% since the week
before the invasion.
This shock to global grain supply is the
biggest supply shock since the OPEC oil cuts in the 1970s. It will mean
food shortages in the Middle East and Africa, and inflation across the
world.

This whole thing stinks to high heaven. Despite the actions of the
players involved, and the actual suffering of innocent people in
Ukraine and in Russia (their economy is being strangled, remember), the notion that this whole thing is one giant dog-wag is something that I just cannot shake.
Are we allowing—or worse, encouraging—Ukraine's near
complete destruction in an effort to drive regime change by turning
Vladimir Putin into a worldwide, unredeemable monster?
Yet the cynic in me can't help but note the similarities between
Vladimir Putin and Ukraine with Saddam Hussein in Kuwait. Were both of
these events set-ups in an effort to destroy these respective
tyrants-for-life?
Hussein was upset with the Kuwaitis on a number of fronts but the
final straw was their using directional drilling to steal his oil—which
they were doing. In a one-on-one meeting Saddam told the U.S.
ambassador to Iraq of his anger and his intentions to invade. The U.S.
ambassador said nothing.
As I understand it, in diplomatic-speak this kind of silence amounts
to tacit approval of actions. Thinking this action was "approved,"
Saddam moved forward with his plans. Once he invaded Kuwait, the United
States quickly formed an international coalition that brought hellfire
down upon the Iraqi troops and the Hussein regime. The Bush
Administration stopped short of taking the fight to Saddam in Iraq in
the hope he would be deposed by his own people because of the
humiliation in Kuwait . . .
. . . The similarities with that situation and Putin in Ukraine are
striking. Whether valid or not, Putin had many grievances regarding
Ukraine. And just as it was with Saddam, the truth is far more nuanced
than the simplistic good guy/bad guy presentation. . .
. . . Did Putin therefore assume the world was giving him wink wink, nudge nudge approval, while still maintaining plausible deniability? And just like Saddam, once the action was taken, the United States led an effort to bring hellfire down upon him.
As many have asked, if the goal was to stop Putin from invading why not take significant actions beforehe invaded versus after? Did we in effect invite the invasion with the
true goal being the end of the Putin regime? Are Ukraine's 44 million
citizens just the price to be paid? You know the old saying, you can't
make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. . .
. . . The media coverage—the loud beating of the drums of war—has been strikingly similar between both invasions.
Babies being killed! Pregnant women being murdered! Savagery beyond
belief. Putin/Hussein and his troops are the embodiment of evil.
Politicians telling us "we" must make sacrifices in the name of this
affront to all that is good and just.

BTW, the Russians have made the claim that the ship that was delivering the money from the U.S. for Alaska sank and that therefore the deal was null and void. Been claiming this for years. There is no real evidence as far as I can see, but it has become something of a grievance with the Russkies.
Don't know how they justify claims on California, but there has been a movement in Russia demanding it "back".
I think it ought to go the other way; we should buy Kamchatka and Sakhalin Island and make it part of the U.S. We waste so much money anyway, at least that way we actually get something for our troubles. Russia should sell that to us - they can't develop it anyway and need the money.
We could sell Sakhalin Island to Japan. Maybe make the whole Island a refuge for the Ainu, who are dwindling in population. We could resettle the Central Americans who want to come here on Kamchatka. That would show whether they really wanted sanctuary or just to suckle at Uncle Sams teet.

That makes a total of 9 people that I personally knew who have died from COVID-19.
7 were fully vaccinated, including 2 of the 7 who were healthy when
they were vaccinated, but died within days of receiving the

2 were unvaccinated.
The world that these
politicians are creating these days makes me sick. There is NOTHING
more nefarious than putting people at risk for financial gain.

Top O the Morning to ye (and the rest of the day for myself)! Today is St. Patrick's day, the feast of the missionary to Ireland and a great excuse to indulge in beer drinking, merriment, and eating German food (corned beef and cabbage are German, not Irish; the Irish in America took to eating it because it was cheap.) And of course the "wearin' O' the Green" had absolutely nothing to do with St. Patrick; it comes from the political troubles, particularly the Irish rebellion of 1798.
The Scottish settlers in Northern Ireland were called Orangemen because they followed William of Orange. They often wore orange while the Catholic Irish took to wearing Green to signify they came from the Emerald Isles and were Catholic.
When the Irish rebellion broke out people took to wearing the colors of their side. Protestants wore Orange while Catholics wore Green.
As the song says "they're hanging men and women for the wearin' o' the Green". It was life or death.
But what of the namesake of the day?
Here is the true story of the missionary to Ireland.
In Ireland St. Pats Day is not a big holiday. And there are a number of other saints who share the day with Patrick.
Patrick was held in slavery in his youth by the Irish, but eventually went back to Britain but voluntarily returned to Ireland to attempt to convert the pagan Irish.
He was truly a great man, no question.
At any rate, today is about more than just green beer, green clothes, and corned beef and cabbage.
So happy St. Paddy's Day! Enjoy the day and wear some green, lest you get pinched!

That is true Mike.
I noticed here in St. Louis it used to be a huge holiday but the city has been promoting Mardi Gras, which is almost always bitterly cold, because they think St. Pats Day is a "white man's holiday" and we can't have anything that isn't "inclusive".
So they have quietly been strangling it, and turnout has dropped off in recent years. I imagine it will be canceled in the next decade.
Sounds good Dana, although green beer is easy; just add green food coloring to any beer. I've got some Harps (an Irish beer) which I intend to so treat on Saturday (I didn't really celebrate the day on Thursday this year because I had to get an eyeball shot and can't do it on Friday - not allowed to eat meat.)
So Saturday is the day.
Heck Bill; you don't have to be Irish to enjoy the cultural traditions of drinking too much and stuffing yourself with fatty meats. Everyone is Irish on St. Pats Day!

Back in my drinking days I never went out on March 17th because the bars were filled with amateur drinkers who never know when they are going to puke. As a result they will often puke in your drink. Us professionals always had clear warning.

I dug further last night and it seems that they didnt vote themselves a raise but their staff is the winners. Who is their staff? Well, according to the Hill 11 of them have openly listed family members as staff members. I believe we can safely add a zero to the 11 and we are only half way there. How many more are unlisted. Then theres AOC whose boy friend is on her staff, not directly related but she will share in this wealth redistribution. How many friends are reaping the rewards of this?

When Republicans controlled Congress, even with a Republican in the White House, they claimed to be powerless because the Democratic minority was blocking their every move.
Now, in the minority themselves, they are almost never able to block anything Democrats want to pass. Democrats fail only when one or two Democrats refuse to stay in line, not because of Republican obstruction.

That is exactly right Dana; the Russians were huge promoters of the global warming scam in the West so they could take out the competition - and it worked. Environmentalists have been their biggest boosters.
BTW I've been seeing that a lot; anyone who tries to be even-handed on this gets accused of being a Russian troll. Happened to me yesterday.

My brother is a professional historian and his field is the 20th century. He tells me that this is exactly how it was on the runup to WWI. Anyone expressing even handedness in the issue was branded a Kaiser kisser.
William Jennings Bryan quit Wilsons cabinet because Wilson was so determined to blame Germany for everything in the war and excuse Britain. It's like that now.

This messes up the plans of the New World Order something awful (and could lead to economic doomsday for the U.S., meaning for the whole rotten world.)

If we only had a precious metal, lets say gold, to trade then you either have it or not and just cant make it up as you go.
BTW Tim heres a counter point to the new world order Putin is messing up. While the hypothetical question was polarizing between parties, the majority of Americans (55%) would still stay and fight if they were in the same position as the Ukrainians are now. Only 38% of those surveyed said they would leave the country.

But polls show that a large majority of Floridians support the bill. So, the TRUTH is, the bill IS NOT "controversial" because a majority support it.

Back in the 1930s, the paper’s Moscow correspondent, Walter Duranty, outright lied about Stalin’s intentional starving of millions of Ukrainians (and won a Pulitzer prize for doing it). But more recently it has peddled a deception that, though involving an event far less tragic than genocide, is no less brazen.
The issue concerns a February 26 Trayvon Martin video tribute the Times released, and ex-president Barack Obama heavily contributed to and publicized, that turns truth on its head as much as Duranty ever could.
