One of the first actions of the Russian peacekeeping forces sent in to Ukraine to de-Nazify it, was to blow up the dam in the North Crimean Canal (see red line), which Ukraine built after Russia invaded and annexed Crimea.

It's funny that Russia had previously claimed that blocking the canal had no impact on Crimean agricultural outputs.

'According to official Russian statistics, the Crimean agricultural industry fully overcame the consequences of blocking the North Crimean Canal and crop yields grew by a factor of 1.5 from 2013 by 2016.'

These official statistics contrast with reports of a massive shrinkage in the area under cultivation in Crimea, from 130,000 hectares in 2013 to just 14,000 in 2017.

But hey, Russia never tells lies.

I agree Bill; even a full sweep won't do anything at this point but slow the collapse. And that by not all that much.

The Republicans are as big a part of the problem as are the Democrats - perhaps more, because they give the Donkeys cover and present the illusion of our gaining ground. It leads our side to wasted effort and overconfidence.

I keep telling conservatives this on Facebook, to little effect. Everyone thinks the Republicans just need to win next election cycle and that will solve our problems. It's really quite amazing.

Ukranians Do Not See Themselves As Russian

"Ukraine is not just a neighbouring country for us,â€ he declared in a speech recognizing the separatist regions of Donbass on February 21st, 2022. "It is an inalienable part of our own history, culture and spiritual space. These are our comrades, those dearest to usâ€”not only colleagues, friends, but also relatives, people bound by blood, by family ties.â€ Putin wasnâ€™t wrong to acknowledge that shared history, which goes back more than a millennium, but his statement was also self-serving nonsense. No one attacks cities where their dearest comrades live. You wonâ€™t see Americans invading Canada. But Putin doesnâ€™t think Ukraine is a neighboring country. He doesnâ€™t think itâ€™s a country at allâ€”he believes it belongs to Russia and therefore to him.

Ukraine begs to differ, and itâ€™s hard to understand the Russian invasion without first understanding why the Ukrainians overthrew President Viktor Yanukovych during the Maidan Revolution in 2014. In 2013, Yanukovych broke a promise he had made and refused to sign a free trade and political association agreement with the European Union. Instead, he vowed to integrate the country with Putinâ€™s Eurasian Economic Union that consists entirely of former Soviet "republics.â€ For that, and for deploying the sinister Berkut riot police against peaceful demonstrators, killing 108 and injuring more than a thousand, Yanukovych was ousted and tried and convicted in absentia for treason. Ukrainians fought and died in their own capital city for the right to integrate with the European Union, the first people in history to do so. Today theyâ€™re doing the same across the country.

Theyâ€™re likely to succeed in the long run. On February 28th, the fourth day of the Russian invasion, Ukraine formally applied for fast-tracked European Union membership. The process usually takes years, but some European leaders backed Ukraineâ€™s admission immediately. On March 10th, all agreed that Ukraine can begin the long process of joining. At the same time, at least some Ukrainian Orthodox churches want to break ties with their Russian patriarch for backing the Russian invasion (in part, the ludicrous figurehead says, because of Western pressure to allow gay pride parades.)

Ukrainian nationalism may have been muted before, smothered beneath Russiaâ€™s tyrannical internationalism as Belarussian nationalism remains to this day. But with the onset of the Russian invasion, Ukrainian nationalism and its clear expression as part of a larger European identity has burst into the open with the power of a hydrogen bomb. No matter what else happens, Ukrainians will remember this chapter in their history for hundreds of years. Itâ€™s difficult to imagine these people ever turning toward Russia and the East again.

The Next Ukrainian Famine

Message today from a German Farmer friend who farms near Hanover to some farmer friends in UK.

Dear Friends,
Yesterday I saw a Dutch farmer, who runs 4,000 hectares of arable farmland in Germany and 12,000 hectares in Ukraine.
In Ukraine most of his men have left to fight the Russians. He has 100,000 liters of diesel left to do spring cultivation, drilling and fertilizing, but that seems about it for the new crops to grow. For the whole season he needs more than 500,000 liters. He has no fuel for the harvest. He has potatoes in storage halls but no electricity for holding the ventilation and temperature and the potatoes are rotting. He canÂ´t haul his grain to the harbour, because there are no truck drivers and the ship loading facilities are bombed. He expects no money from sales of current stocks and will have no new crops to bring to harvest. His farm is 150 km south of Kiev.
Ukraine grows sunflowers and makes sunflower oil for export mainly to Germany for frying potatoes â€“ French fries. French fries in Germany are fried to 80 percent with oil from Ukraine. People in Germany might not get fries in the coming season.
Another farm in Ukraine has 120,000 hectares and 2,200 labourers. Today only 200 labourers stayed on the farm. The fuel tanks are bombed or confiscated and no spring crop will be grown. Grain stocks canÂ´t be shipped because the ship loading facilities are bombed.
Russian farms can not get parts for their machinery (John Deere and Claas tractors and combines) because of the embargo. They will also not get any chemicals or fertilizer because they are all from EU countries.
From tomorrow on we will host 6 Ukrainians in the house of my deceased parents. On Saturday another Ukrainian mother with her 6 years old son will join our farm.
This situation is absolutely the last, of which I would ever have dreamed of in my life.
After 1945 we had 35 German refugees on our farm from 20 million who came from the east. In 1992 we host a Volga German family from Russia with 5 people for a whole year, when 1 mn of them came to Germany. Today itâ€™s the Ukrainians..
The Ukrainians get work permit from the first day in Germany and full social benefits. It is very costly for the Governement. Putin and his friends want the farmland to make a profit for themselves personally.

1 First lets establish the real numbers. A hectare is about 2.5 acres. Now we can see the real holdings of these land barons. The Dutch farmer(?) is running about 30000 acres in Ukraine. The unnamed farmer(Soros)(?) better then a quarter of a million acres. Wonder who was killed to secure that much land.
Once again Tim all Ukraine has to do is surrender. If after that he tries to starve them then you have a case.

4 As the war is now heading into the suburbs and cities where you know the Ukrainians have an advantage and to route them will take a Berlin type bombing raid and the innocent people in Ukraine who just want to live their lives are paying the price.
Also the West is only going to give Ukraine enough weapons so the Ukrainians can keep poking the bear.
The Ukrainians, the people, not the talking heads would be much better off if they surrendered and let Putin take the East and South and then there still might be a Ukraine. If not the war continues and needless life is lost.

I agree; the West will only give enough weapons to keep the war going. There is a plan behind all this. Not inconsequentially, Biden needs to keep this distraction going while he implements the radical policies his insane handlers want. And this is intended to be used to drive the West even further into the insanity of green tech, I suspect. Also, they want to begin consolidating the world empire they so dream about, and getting rid of Russia over time is one of the keys. Russia was useful and still is, but not much longer.

I would point out that time really isn't on Putin's side. He is spending vast sums of money on this war. He cannot afford to do it without Chinese help.

So the fight going into the 'burbs may be a good thing from the Ukrainian perspective Mike. Putin can't fight another Afghanistan.

Granted, Ukraine isn't Afghanistan, but it will still suck up all of Russias resources.

We don't really want to topple Russia, nor Putin. Russia is not our friend, but she isn't our bitterest enemy as in the old Soviet days and it acts as a counterbabalance to
the Chinese, who are far more dangerous and a worse enemy. And Putin is a murdering bastard but he's not as bad as some and we will no doubt be sorry to see him go; he'll be replaced by a true bad guy. He has to be contained, not eliminated.

Trump was handling Russia right. He gave them reasonable respect while making it clear what he would tolerate.

That said, I still don't cotton to the idea of Ukraine just surrendering. They are a sovereign nation. And we promised to protect them. And if Russia takes them they gain a massive strategic advantage in the eastern part of Europe.

6 All good points Tim except our promise to protect them. Looking at some of the lefts legislation against Ukraine prior to the war tells a different story. You asked for links that I dont have because some of my research has taken me to sites that I thought I would never in my life give a click too and I feel dirty from my visits but you go where the story takes you. I saw a hit piece on Lara Logan just the other day on Weasel Zippers, who I believe is going down the same rabbit hole little Green Footballs went,that took me to media matters. She hit on the Azov battalion and soros connections but didnt take it all the way with the medias complicity in this. They called her crazy for pointing out the truth.
That the west would love to see Russia bogged down in another Afghan style war would give them tingles. The problem is that the Ukrainians will suffer the same fate as the Afghans. There are people out there that are worse then Putin.

Newly uncovered reports and documents obtained by the National Pulse show that Obama played a role building a Ukraine-based biolab to handle â€˜especially dangerous pathogens.â€™

One of the now-deleted reports shows that a laboratory was opened in Odessa, Ukraine under the Nunn-Lugar framework. The facilityâ€™s planning started in 2005 in coordination with then-senators Dick Lugar and Barack Obama.

"U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar applauded the opening of the Interim Central Reference Laboratory in Odessa, Ukraine, this week, announcing that it will be instrumental in researching dangerous pathogens used by bioterrorists,â€ BioPrep watch reported in the now-deleted post.

"The level-3 bio-safety lab, which is the first built under the expanded authority of the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction program, will be used to study anthrax, tularemia and Q fever as well as other dangerous pathogens,â€ the report added.

Sure; these were labs designed to eliminate biological weapons, not to manufacture them.

If that is the case why were the records deleted?

And the lab in Wuhan wasn't doing Gain of Function research, either.

Ukrainian War About to Spread

The war in Ukraine is threatening to spread. Russia may attack a NATO country to stem the flood of fighters and arms into the area.

From the Debka Files:

An armed clash with the US came a step closer with Russiaâ€™s air strike on Sunday, March 13, on Ukraineâ€™s Yavariv military training center near the Polish border. The attack came after Russiaâ€™s Dep FM Sergei Ryabkov warned the US that the convoys bringing weapons from a number of countries to Ukraine were "not just a dangerous move but legitimate targets.â€

The Russians were targeting Western volunteers for the support of Ukraine as well as incoming weapons. Despite denials, military sources reveal that present at the base were volunteers from the US, Ireland, Germany and the UK. There is no information on whether foreign personnel were among the 35 people killed and 130 injured in the Russian long-range missile strike at the Ukraine military center west of Lviv.

Washingtonâ€™s counter-warning was delivered by White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who said: "If there is a military attack on Nato territory, it would â€¦ bring the full force of the Nato alliance to bear in responding to it,â€ he said.

A perilous standoff marks the nearly third week of the Ukraine conflict, say DEBKAfileâ€™s military sources: On the one hand, Moscow cannot afford to let the West continue to pump weapons into Ukraine for use against Russian forces â€“ and may not stop at the border of a NATO member to stop the deliveries. On the other, Washington and NATO canâ€™t stop the flow of millions of dollars-worth of arms, such as anti-tank and antiaircraft missiles, as well as Western fighters, for bolstering Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion. Clashes are becoming inevitable; they are likely to be local and limited in scope, at least in the early stage.

Of course they don't admit Biden is trying to drag this thing out - or that it was Biden's policies that enabled Putin to do this in the first place.

David (usually quite level-headed) says:

I have had enough. I was in favor of not getting involved with Russia. But our sanctions have not worked, so I am willing to risk nuclear war with that runt/bully Russia. Yes, they have nukes- but so do we and it is time for us to stand up for what is right. We did it against non-nuke countries in the past. The "right and wrong" is still the same. I carry every day so that I can enforce the "right and wrong" at my level. It is time for our country to step up and enforce what we know to be international law. It is time for us to encourage the rest of the western world to step up and enforce international law, even if the other guy has nukes. Not a time for proportional response- one "tactical nuke" will result in annihilation. Just like an armed thug and an armed citizen situation- someone is going to die. Strength conquers timidity. We need to show our strength!!! Russia has many weaknesses. MANY. They don't even have good tires on their vehicles. Do you think that their nukes actually function?? Time to call their bluff.

I disagree:

I wrote about how this worked back when Russia invaded Georgia in '08. https://pjmedia.com/blog/timothy-birdnow/2008/10/24/drill-here-drill-now-helped-end-russia-georgia-war-n18506 The conditions are comparable today. Remember, Russia has an economy smaller than Texas, or New York, or California. We can strangle them. They can't do that to us.

Bear in mind the Russians have reasons for what they did, too. I don't agree they had a right to invade, but we aren't being given Russia's side of the story.

First, we expanded NATO into their back yard. Russia has always been fearful of potential enemies on their border (and with good reason.) Ukraine was always one of the "Russias". It's like the Russians expanding the old Warsaw Pact into California.

Second, the Ukrainians cut off water to the Crimean Peninsula. Can't say I blame them but it undoubtedly cheesed them off.

Third, the Ukrainians threatened to cut off the flow of oil and gas through their country. Right now most Russian oil and gas have to flow through Ukrainian territory. Granted, the Russians were squeezing Ukraine, charging them exorbitant amounts for it (the Ukrainians were buying Russian gas from Poland because it was cheaper) but the Ukrainians had threatened to cut the Russian pipelines (including Nordstream 1) That flow is the lifeblood of the Russian economy.

Russia had repeatedly complained about the treatment of Russian-speaking people in Donbas to no avail. The Ukrainian government had banned the use of all languages save Ukrainian everywhere.

Also, the U.S. had biological research labs in Ukraine (aka biologicaol weapons research labs) right smack on Russia's border. That was hard to ignore.

And Biden and Hillary and the rest of the Democrat top brass was deep in bed with the Ukrainian government.

I am in no way excusing this invasion. I think it part of a geopolitical strategy by Putin, and I further think it was an economic policy by the Russian government. Putin is on record as wanting to restore the old Czarist empire in terms of area, and that means Ukraine. Also, Putin needs that area to make it easier to ship fuel to Europe. His plan has always been to hold Europe under his thumb by controlling their oil and gas.

Putin is a monster; just ask anyone who got to enjoy one of his Polonium cocktails. But he rather understands what he is up against in the New World Order types. And we did treat Russia horribly after the end of the Cold War. They are still pretty mad about that.

This war need never have happened. A modicum of skill could have seen a diplomatic solution. But it serves Mr. Biden, and Biden at best grossly mishandled all of this.

It can still be handled through diplomacy and economic pressures. Time is not on Putin's side.

Putin probably wants a settlement at this point, and if he could get a guarantee to keep Ukraine out of NATO that would probably be enough. He needs something to show for this. You always have to provide an escape hatch for your enemy, lest they fight to the death. Putin's back is against the wall, and he is not going to go quietly. If he loses this his head will turn up somewhere sans body.

So he will make a deal, and Biden will make a deal too that he can spin as victory, thus turning the tide in the mid-terms. But Biden needs this to stretch out a while longer yet.

Get the damned price of oil and gas donw and the Russian invasion will sputter out.

SOME Biden defenders are challenging his effect on energy costs. Some facts:

Gas was soaring way back in Dec. He released 50 million barrels (a drop in the ocean) from our Strategic Reserve - long before Russia. In Nov. he passed new regulations governing methane emissions from oil and gas production, transmission, storage, and distribution that would cost more than $10 billion a year. Bidenâ€™s first action after taking office was to halt new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters. The administration canceled the Keystone XL pipeline and suspended oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and New Mexico (despite opposition from the Navajo Nation). He also resurrected the "Waters of the United Statesâ€ rule, which increased barriers to energy projects. In April 2021, without the consent of Congress, Biden rejoined the Paris agreement, which will result in onerous new regulations that raise energy costs; and exempts China, Asia, India and Africa, the biggest polluters. Biden forced every U.S. state to develop state carbon-reductio n plans that must be approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation as well as be updated every four years. He has finalized a new rule regulating greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks. That single regulation will raise the average vehicle price by $1,000. Biden issued a rule to phase out a common, inexpensive refrigerant. This is a 'de facto' tax on air conditioning and refrigeration. He created the 'Civilian Climate Corps', which would Federally fund the salaries of tens of thousands of anti-energy activists who would perpetuate high energy costs by demanding new and costly federal regulations and legislation. I could go on for pages - but it's all out there if one cares to get educated. Cheers.

He also pressured the banks to refuse loans to oil companies to defund them. And he said we would ban gas-powered cars by the end of the decade, which was guaranteed to get investors out of the oil and gas market. He further angered the Saudis over the murder of Kashoggi, and also by reinvigorating the Iran nuclear deal, so they are content to allow the prices of oil to rise. And while Biden's administration has approved some leases (he was ordered by the courts to do so) he has done it in a way to prevent any drilling. It generally requires a number of permits to open a new well, and Biden will approve just one and keep the projects held up. He also refused permits to a new refinery, the first one to be built in years. And don't get me started on coal! Or nuclear.

5 Dana, I don't think they ignore that. Rather, this is part of the overall plan to create a globalist system. They want places like China to achieve parity with the U.S. and the rest of the West, and to do that they have to hamstring us in favor of places like China. Banning oil drilling not only stops our cars but also prevents us from making our own plastics and other things. Then we have to buy them from these Third World countries. It's all part of the plan to make us interdependent and reliant on foreign countries so we can put an end to war.

Look at how it was done in Europe to create the E.U.; that is the template. France tied Germany's economy to them through a series of treaties and economic partnerships. There hasn't been a European war since - but at what cost? There isn't really a France or Germany anymore either.
