Snopes: Fact-Checker of Jokes

Dana Mathewson

Just what we need: more proof that the left has no sense of humor whatsoever. I suppose it makes sense, as it's pretty well-known even today that the Soviet Union had none, nor was there any showing in any of the other Socialist Paradises.

And if Snopes ever had any credibility, it's long been gone.
To my knowledge, every purported fact checker in the United States is on the left–Snopes, PolitiFact, the Washington Post, the Associated Press. If there is a neutral or conservative fact checker operating–other than sites on the free internet like Power Line–I don’t know who it is.

Snopes is not a sophisticated operation. It has fallen for satires on many occasions, purporting to fact-check what are obviously jokes. In at least a couple of cases, Snopes has fallen for Babylon Bee parodies. This instance is interesting because Snopes has finally caught on to the fact that the Babylon Bee is a satire site, but "fact-checks” it anyway:

Did U.S. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Repeatedly Guess ‘Free’ on TV Show ‘The Price is Right?’

Now, come on. Does Snopes seriously think that anyone saw the Bee’s story and believed that Ocasio-Cortez went on The Price Is Right (which apparently still exists, to my surprise) and guessed that EVERY SINGLE THING IS FREE? Yes. Snopes actually believes that, or pretends to, even though in fact, it got the joke:

On a personal note, for years I have used and relied on the TruthorFiction website and did not find a political bias. It's here if you want to try it: https://www.truthorfiction.com/

Bigotry is Popular

Dana Mathewson

Remember awhile back when Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was spewing a lot of anti-Semitic tripe and the House of Representatives couldn't muster the stones to generate a decent reprimand? Did you wonder about that?

Well, in politics, when something happens that seems a bit hinky, it's always well to remember the old adage "Follow the money."

Being anti-American and anti-Israel is working well for Ilhan Omar. The Star Tribune reports that she is far and away the biggest fundraiser among Minnesota’s eight House members:

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., at the center of a national commotion for her remarks about Israel and the 9/11 terror attacks, raised more than $830,000 in campaign cash during her tumultuous first three months in office, far outpacing the rest of the state’s U.S. House delegation.
***
Donations poured in from across the country. About $400,000 of the $417,000 in itemized contributions reported by her campaign, including small-dollar donations given through the ActBlue fundraising platform, came from outside Minnesota.

Omar’s haul is around three to five times as much as other Minnesota House members have taken in. Meanwhile, Omar is being raised to heroic status in her district’s public schools. Elementary school students are apparently being taught to revere her, much as, in recent years, they have been taught to see Martin Luther King, Jr. as a kind of secular saint. Someone has distributed an Ilhan Omar card that students are instructed to color, while writing a "report” on the inside. I assume those reports are paeans to the Congresswoman.

We don't post photos here, but you can see them in the article, which is here: https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2019/04/bigotry-is-popular.php

Notre Dame had a wooden roof

Jack Kemp forwards this. From NBC News:

The cause of the massive blaze that engulfed the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is under investigation, authorities said Monday as firefighters continued to work to save the world-famous landmark. But some experts said the extensive renovations going on at the historic building could have contributed to the fire. There is a history of churches, synagogues and temples going up in flames while under repair, said Glenn Corbett, an associate professor of fire science at John Jay College in New York. Notre Dame, which was built in the 12th and 13th centuries, has a wooden roof.

Firefighters managed to put out the blaze before it destroyed the building's two towers. Artifacts inside, including what is believed by Catholics to be Jesus' Crown of Thorns, a piece of the True Cross, and a nail from the Crucifixion, were all saved. Pieces of artwork from inside the building were also rescued. No one was injured in the fire.

Macron launches reconstruction contest

Timothy Birdnow

Macron launches a contest to design new spires for Notre Dame.

It was just such a contest that gave us the ridiiculous memorial in Shankesville, site of the crashed airliner that was retaken by heroes from the 011 lhijackers. It was such a contest that kept the rebuilding of the World Trade Center in stasis. And no doubt it this contest will emphasize not Christianity but some sort of agnostic brotherhood. This is a terrible idea.

But we knew it was coming. The West and particularly agnostic France is incapable of doing anything to preserve our heritage.

Why won't Sanctuary Cities Welcome "Refugees"?

Timothy Birdnow

Our old friend Tim McNabb has a few choice words on those who are upset with Trump's suggestion that illegals be housed in sanctuary cities:

Millions of Americans (MOA) are asking themselves "Why wouldn't these cities welcome refugees?" and "How is it illegal?" It probably is illegal, but MOA are thinking that the fact that it is illegal to move thousands of refugees into jurisdictions that ostensibly welcome them is stupid, and the people pimping this view are stupid.

Trump is trolling them, and they are falling for it.

Dems try to exempt black babies from abortion law

Timothy Birdnow

Just to prove that they indeed ARE the party of eugenics and white supremacy, Democrats introduced a bill to exempt
black babies from a pro-life law.

It is astonishing that they would actually try to do such a thing, but they did!

The Democrats were the party of the Confederacy, Jim Crowe, abortion, and separate but equal. Why do black people continue to stick with them now, when they no longer even care about blacks except at voting time? The Democrats are the ones wanting to bring Hispanics into the country by the millions to take the jobs away from black workers and replace them in society in general.

Time for Blexit!

12 French churches attacked before Notre Dame inferno

Dana Mathewson

Apparently, we cannot rule out arson in the case of the catastrophic fire at Notre Dame. And if arson, then by whom?

Only hours after the first flames that eventually would consume Notre Dame’s roof and spire flickered, the questions about the cause began.

"Detectives investigating the catastrophic blaze are today interviewing specialist restorers who were carrying out works on the cathedral spire when the inferno broke out,” reported DailyMail.com.

"French police are understood to have launched a criminal inquiry after a ‘stray flame’ cause fire to engulf the landmark last night, with heroic firefighters battling for eight hours to bring the blaze under control.”

With the recent desecration of a dozen Catholic churches in France in just one week, investigators will not rule out the possibility of arson.

[...]

Islam critic Pamela Geller posted a report under the headline: "Notre Dame Cathedral inferno ‘intentionally set.'”

She cited Time columnist Christopher J. Halewriting: "A Jesuit friend in Paris who works in #NotreDame told me cathedral staff said the fire was intentionally set.”

TIME columnist Christopher J. Hale @chrisjollyhale tweeted, "A Jesuit friend in Paris who works in #NotreDame told me cathedral staff said the fire was intentionally set.” and then he deleted the tweet after a few minutes. || #NotreDameFire #mepolitics pic.twitter.com/gPH04JCzSk

— Matthew Thomas McDonald (@Real_Matty_Mac) April 15, 2019

Geller noted France has been hit with a string of fires at Catholic churches, some of which occurred alongside desecration of sacred objects and acts of vandalism.

"While the fire at Notre Dame appears to be an accident connected to renovations of the church,” she wrote, "the image of the famous spire engulfed in flames is a hard hit on the historically deeply Catholic France, as well as Catholics all over who have seen their religion reeling from devastating scandals, cover-ups and attacks.”

She said that while Notre Dame is "undoubtedly the most well-known landmark to be affected, Paris’ second largest church, Saint-Sulpice, briefly burst into flames on March 17, the fire damage doors and stained glass windows on the building’s exterior.”

Police later said the incident was not an accident.

Twitter users commenting on Hale’s tweet pointed out a deliberate attack was possible.

Hugh Easton wrote: "The area of roof where the fire appears to have taken hold was covered with scaffolding. That would have allowed an arsonist to climb up there and set the fire. Normally the roof would be completely inaccessible.”

And Mirjam152 added, "Just dress up as a construction worker.”

Breitbart reported the attacks on a dozen Catholic churches in France over the period of one week in March.

The attacks culminated with a fire set at Saint-Sulpice shortly after Mass.Other vandalism occurred at the church of Notre-Dame des Enfants in Nimes, the church of Notre-Dame in Dijon, and in Lavaur.

California lawmakers push to ban tiny shampoo bottles from state's hotels

Dana Mathewson

At last! California lawmakers finally get serious about environmental issues! They can't take the necessary steps to try and prevent wildfires, but they can try to get rid of those pesky little hotel shampoo bottles! It's about darn time, don't you think?

Tiny shampoo bottles are causing major problems for California, lawmakers say.

California State Assembly members are spearheading an effort to ban those tiny, often complimentary bottles of shampoo and conditioner offered at hotels and resorts across the state, arguing that they are terrible for the environment.

"We know we have an enormous problem with our world, we’ve become addicted to [plastic] and it’s caused a major dilemma environmentally,”Assemblyman Ash Kalra, who introduced Bill AB-1162 in February, told ABC News.

Under the proposed legislation, lodging sites across the state, including vacation rentals, would be prohibited from providing guests with any "small plastic bottle containing a personal care product,” and would be penalized with first a warning, then a fine of $500 per violation.

Reusable or refillable bottles would not be prohibited. As noted by ABC News, in an effort to replace those small plastic bottles, Marriott hotels had announced intentions to start fitting their showers and bath areas with refillable dispensers in 2018.

I know just what brother-in-law (and occasional contributor) David Dickinson will say about this: Good grief!

I'm just wondering when the Californiacs will move to ban K-cups. Will they mandate a state buy-back of Keurig and other K-cup-compatible coffee makers?

Fire on the Temple Mount

Timothy Birdnow

While the Notre Dame fire has sucked up all the oxygen where such things are concerned, it should be noted that Solomon'Stables aka The Marwani Prayer Hall, on the Temple Mount near the Al Aqsa Mosque, caught fire. According to the Jerusalem Post:

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the director general of the Jerusalem Waqf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, told Jordan's Al-Mamlaka that the fire may have been caused by children.

PA President Mahmoud Abbas warned anyone against targeting the holy site, stressing the need to preserve Al-Aqsa's "great religious and humanitarian value."

End excerpt.

Not sure why the head of the Palestinian Authority is commenting on this; he has no authority here. But what the heck.

That last paragraph suggests that Abbas thinks the Notre Dame fire was set by Muslims, and he's trying to get ahead of any retaliation. Not that Christians (or Jews) are known for tit-for-tat violence the way Muslims do it.

Notre Dame: An Omen

Dana Mathewson

The great Dennis Prager rings in on the subject.

The symbolism of the burning of Notre Dame Cathedral, the most renowned building in Western civilization, the iconic symbol of Western Christendom, is hard to miss.

It is as if God Himself wanted to warn us in the most unmistakable way that Western Christianity is burning -- and with it, Western civilization.

Every major Western (and one major non-Western) social and intellectual force has conspired to rid Europe of Christianity and the civilization it produced.

Within the Western world, the French Enlightenment -- the intellectual basis of the French Revolution and the modern West -- sought to replace Christianity, and religion in general, with secularism rooted in reason. No God, Bible or Ten Commandments is necessary for morality or meaning: reason (and science) will replace them.

The two final deathblows to Christianity in Europe were the world wars. World War I ended most Westerners' belief in the nation-state and the West. Christianity, already weakened by the Enlightenment, was further weakened by World War I. German Christians were killing millions of French and English Christians, and French and English Christians were killing millions of German Christians. So the argument and sentiment against Christianity went. Then World War II saw even more death on the Christian continent as well as the failure of Catholic and Protestant churches in Nazi Germany to offer even minimal noncompliance with the Nazis' Jew-hatred.

With the end of World War II, every internal Western intellectual doctrine was secular. God, the Bible and religion were regarded at best as innocuous nonsense and at worst as noxious nonsense.

Meanwhile, Europeans brought a non-European ideology into Europe, an ideology that, for more than a thousand years, sought to replace Christianity as the world's dominant religion. The Europeans, believing in nothing distinctly Christian or Western and believing in the moral and intellectual nonsense known as "multiculturalism" -- a doctrine that asserts that all cultures are morally equivalent -- saw nothing problematic in bringing millions of Muslims into Europe. They had no idea that most of these people actually wanted to replace Christianity with their religion. They had no idea because, in their ignorance and arrogance, they assumed that because they were secular multiculturalists, everybody else was, too -- or would be, once they lived in Europe.

They were wrong, of course. And as a result, the two dominant forces in Europe -- secular leftism and Islamism -- sought the end of Christianity and the West. (The left believes that protecting Western civilization is equivalent to protecting white supremacy.)

[...]

I don't know if a worker accident or a radical Muslim set fire to Notre Dame Cathedral (as they have scores of other churches around Europe). In terms of what the fire represented, it doesn't much matter. What matters is the omen: Europe is burning, just as Notre Dame was.

Please read the whole article. As with everything Dennis Prager writes, it is essential reading. https://townhall.com/columnists/dennisprager/2019/04/16/notre-dame-an-omen-n2544832

Relativism and Relativism's god

Timothy Birdnow

Selwyn Duke has a wonderfully insightful article at American Conservative today.

Here is a brief glimpse:

Interestingly, though, Lavrov rightly criticizes the West for wanting to meld nations and cultures, yet himself has proposed what could be construed as the melding of all religions. He might say that he simply supports distilling commonalities out of them for universal use, but, in reality, globalization’s immigrationism and multiculturalism and his global-values notion reflect the same mistake.

It’s irrelevant whether something is "shared.” Venereal disease can be shared, and the flu is widely shared. Commonality tells us nothing about quality. Where "values” are concerned, and we should be speaking of "virtues,” all that matters is whether they’re true.

But moderns don’t generally believe in the true because they don’t believe in Truth (correctly defined as absolute and existing apart from man); they’re moral relativists, believing all "values” are human inventions and hence relative and, in theory, equal.

This is what breeds the West’s cultural relativism and religious relativism (the latter of which Lavrov seems to espouse). After all, what differentiates different cultures is what differentiates different faiths: that they involve different values. Yet this is a distinction without a difference if "all values are equal.” For then all cultures and religions would have to be morally equal, too, since what differentiates them — "values” — are actually all qualitatively the same.

Thus (mis)informed, it follows that it doesn’t matter what culture or faith you embrace or if you mix them all up, from any objective standpoint; they’re all just flavors of the day. In other words, it’s silly to criticize cultural relativism while entertaining the religious variety. If religions are qualitatively "relative,” cultures would also have to be. Both ideas are corollaries of moral relativism.

Instead of wallowing in this confusion, one question we should ask is: What is the ideal culture? If we have it, we should retain it; if we’re lacking, we should move toward it. But simply mixing cultures together, haphazardly, allowing certain cultural elements to supplant others, unthinkingly, is free-association foolhardiness. It’s like supposing that you could randomly slap mechanical parts together and luck into building a functional airplane. Or, it’s like instead of finding a great recipe and following it meticulously to create your delectable dish, just throwing whatever comes your way into the pot, oblivious to whether the result will be an unpalatable or even poisonous brew.

Thoughts on the Notre Dame Fire

Timothy Birdnow

It appears the Notre Dame Cathedral fire is out.

Authorities are (Naturally) denying this is a case of arson or terrorism. But the grand cathedral appears to be a total loss.

It's interesting; I did a Google search of Notre Dame terrorism and a huge number of sites popped up decrying any suggestion of terrorism - which leads me to believe that everyone strongly suspects this is the case. In our post-modern world none dare call it Islamic Terrorism! If someone had written Aluha Ahkbar on the side of the Cathedral they would claim it was a coincidence.

Methinks they doth protest too much!

Color me very skeptical. If someone tries to build a mosque there we will know.

BTW, There was a big stink over a youtube video link which connected a video of the Cathedral burning with information over the 911 attacks.

Poetic Interlude in Honor of the Death of Notre Dame

Timothy Birdnow

On this mournful day, after which one of Christendom's and, indeed, one of Western Civilization's greatest icons - the Church of Notre Dame - has burned to the ground, I thought a little poetry would be in order. This was a favorite of Abraham Lincoln. William Knox poem Mortality 1824:

Oh why should the spirit of mortal be proud?
Like a fast-flitting meteor, a fast-flying cloud,
A flash of the lightning, a break of the wave,
He passes from life to his rest in the grave.

The leaves of the oak and the willow shall fade,
Be scattered around, and together be laid;
As the young and the old, the low and the high,
Shall crumble to dust and together shall lie.

The child that a mother attended and loved,
The mother that infant's affection who proved,
The husband that mother and infant who blessed,--
Each, all, are away from their dwellings of rest. more...

Notre Dame Burns, and the Church Weeps

Dana Mathewson

David French pens a poignant article, which perhaps might have been titled "Notre Dame Burns, and Christendom Weeps," in National Review. This is certainly worth your read.

For 800 years the people of France gave the world a great gift. For 800 years countless millions experienced its transcendent beauty. Then, in an afternoon, it was gone — gutted by fire. We watched it burn, and across the whole of Christendom men and women were surprised by the extent of their grief.

In the days and weeks that follow, people will share their stories about Notre Dame. Here’s mine. On March 9, 1996, I walked into the great cathedral on the morning of my wedding day. The gravity of the moment was starting to sink in, and I wanted a place to pray. We Protestants are accustomed to thinking of the great cathedrals of Europe mainly as tourist attractions — as beautiful historical buildings and not as actual, living churches. That morning changed my heart.

It was too early for most tourists to arrive, so I walked past other worshipers, men and women on their knees before the Lord.I knelt also. I asked God’s blessing on my wedding, on my marriage, and on the children we hoped to have. In that moment, I felt the presence of God, but I also felt something else — for a moment I was staggered at the thought of the sheer number of people who’d knelt in this same spot and asked God for these same good things. I felt more connected to the larger body of Christ than I’d ever felt before.

Please read the entire article. It matters! https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/notre-dame-cathedral-burns-church-weeps/

And yes, I believe I'm right that Christendom weeps. I'm weeping as I write this. This incredible cathedral can never be repaired to be what it was, to represent what it was.

In the days when the great cathedrals were built, mankind glorified the Lord. No effort was too great to do so, and so no expense was spared to build cathedrals such as Notre Dame, probably the greatest of all. Nowadays we are apostate; Christianity is considered akin to terrorism. Is this what we are coming to?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Quits Facebook, Calls Social Media a ‘Public Health Risk’

Dana Mathewson

Color me skeptical, but I'll bet this is because she has recently been mocked for some of her recent social media activity.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), known for live-streaming herself on Instagram, said on Sunday that she has given up Facebook and is scaling back on all social media, which she described as a "public health risk to everybody.”

The New York Democrat said on Yahoo News’s Skullduggery podcast that she has stopped using her Facebook account — even though her official page remains active and still runs active advertisements sponsored by her campaign, according to the Washington Post.

"I actually think that social media poses a public health risk to everybody,” she said on the podcast. "There are amplified impacts for young people, particularly children under the age of three, with screen time. But I think it has a lot of effects on older people. I think it has effects on everybody. Increased isolation, depression, anxiety, addiction, escapism.”

[...]

She last live-streamed herself on Thursday, April 4, for about an hour, as she sat on the floor in her Washington, DC, apartment and ranted about her political views while eating popcorn, drinking white wine, and putting together IKEA furniture.

Critics widely mocked the video on social media, including those who mimicked her in their own videos.

Well, at least she didn't live-stream herself at the dentist's office, like Beto O'Rourke did. I was rather expecting something like that to be next. But seriously, folks, if she's talking like this, you have to wonder if she's going to call for a mandatory limit on social media usage -- or at least for "non-liberals."

Is Notre Dame fire Terrorism?

Timothy Birdnow

Notre Dame Cathedral (Our Lady of Paris) is burning, and Rush Limbaugh just said a main spire collapsed.

I wonder; did someone set this?  With Paris full of Muslims, this would be a powerful strike at the heart of Christendom, or at least at a core image of the West.

Muslims frequently destroy monuments and memorials. Read my articles on the subject here and here.

If this was terrorism the authorities will be loathe to admit it.

The Trans Syndrome; girl Punished for kneeing boy in bathroom

Timothy Birdnow

A group of boys invaded a girls restroom in a high school in Alaska and one of the girls kneed one of the invading boys in the nards. She was disciplined, being suspended and missing her prom, for her troubles.

According to KTUU in Fairbanks:

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District said in a statement that it cannot comment on any specific investigation or disciplinary action, but went on to say that the district's Title IX specialist has conducted an investigation.

The District also said multiple students faced disciplinary action.

"The district does not encourage students or staff to use force against students, staff, or visitors to school facilities. Students or staff who use force against another person on school grounds could be subject to disciplinary action, depending on the facts and circumstances of the incident," the statement said.

"She did the right thing, and we should be backing her, not having her sitting at home wondering whether she made the right decision or not," Wilson said.

As I recently argued our modern liberal society has made any independent action a crime - including defending yourself. The end result is we now inhabit a very grim and scary world, one that is completely oppressed by Progressive thought, by speech codes, by the tyranny of groups over individuals. That this girl was punished for defending herself speaks volumes. Individual action, or family action, is repressed.

These boys are stupid; they should proclaim themselves transgendered and they would have every right to be in the girl's restroom. That's all it takes!
