The Washington Post gets it right on the NFL

Jack Kemp

This is amazing that someone on the left at the Washington Post, in what is an unsigned article or editorial, actually understands regular "Deplorable" Americans. And they know they can't stop this train wreck for the Democrats from happening.

Kneeling NFL players will help Republicans in November

August 21, 2018

If National Football League players continue their protests during the national anthem this season, it will rile some Republican voters, increasing their intensity and making it more likely that they will vote. At a time when Democrats want their candidates to be less controversial and let dissatisfaction with President Trump carry them into office, continued protests by NFL players will force the issue back into the public spotlight and onto the campaign trail, where Democrats will mostly have to side with the protesters.

SECTION OMITTED

With the NFL’s regular season starting in about two weeks, the debate over these protests is sure to find its way into more and more campaigns. And it comes at a time when the NFL is dealing with an image crisis for its handling of domestic abuse and long-term head injuries (plus rule changes that slow the pace and thrill of the game). As the FiveThirtyEight analysis points out: "Patriotism. Free speech. Race. Politics. President Trump. There are a lot [of] hot-button issues that intersect in the NFL protests.” But collectively, these issues have been reduced down to a bumper sticker — standers vs. kneelers. That is a net positive for Republicans.

Time to stockpile sympathy cards for The Algore?

Dana Mathewson

This just in from Tammy Bruce's site (BTW, as far as cards, yesterday was Tammy's birthday):

*Cold* Atlantic Water Brings Less Activity For Hurricane Season

That's right, dear readers. Via Forbes:

We are approaching the latter part of August, which typically means that we are entering the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) statistics, September 10th is the peak of the season with the month of August serving as a significant ramp up period. This year forecasters have continued to adjust their forecasts downward. One of the primary reasons is that the region of the Atlantic that "breeds” storms at this time of year has colder than normal waters.

NOAA recently released its updated projections for the season….It notes,

The outlook indicates a 60% chance of a below-normal season, a 30% chance of a near-normal season, and only a 10% chance of an above-normal season. Less activity is now expected compared to NOAA’s pre-season outlook issued on 24 May…..The Atlantic hurricane region includes the North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico….

Ocasio-Cortez raises eyebrows after citing national park as example of Democratic socialism

Dana Mathewson

I believe this is a wonderful example of "When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail." The left's shiny new object is beginning to lose her shine, big-time -- at least in the eyes of older, wiser people. Which means just about everybody.

Fox News once again provides the laugh of the day.

Left-wing Democrats have long said that implementing Democratic socialism is easier than conservatives claim. But according to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, it’s a walk in the park.

The overnight Democratic superstar, who rose out of obscurity after beating Rep. Joe Crowley, D-NY, in June’s primary, has been widely mocked for a number of gaffes and misstatements she has made on a subsequent media and campaign tour.

That mockery looked set to continue this week after she took a leisurely stroll through Maine’s Acadia National Park, and declared it -- along with other benign Sunday stops -- an example of democratic socialism.

She cited not only her visit to the park, but also eating a breakfast sandwich at a cafe co-op, and "supporting worker-owned businesses.” She also added as a "bonus” that she spotted a Planned Parenthood branch "helping people, per usual.”

She posted a number of accompanying pictures -- including her relaxing under a bridge, and another of her smiling outside the aforementioned Planned Parenthood center.

But while worker-owned businesses may have a ring of "Workers of the World, Unite!” to them, Ocasio-Cortez took heat for what critics described as the common mistake of equating some things government-run to socialism.

"The National Park System is not socialism in action: It is a mix of public goods, like monuments, and government maintenance of park land, which is not an interruption of private economic activity or a usurpation of private property rights,” The Weekly Standard’s Chris Deaton wrote in a column.

Certainly worth your time to read it, and it isn't long. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/08/21/ocasio-cortez-raises-eyebrows-after-citing-national-park-as-example-democratic-socialism.html

Kooky law aims to ban yet another thing liberals don't like

Dana Mathewson

California does it again. Their economy is in a shambles, farmers are crying for water, illegal aliens are overrunning the state, so . . .
Governor Jerry Brown is likely to sign a bill that prohibits restaurants from offering anything other than milk or water with their kids’ meals, under the pretense of preventing obesity.
That's right, dear readers. Never mind that the power-generating wind turbines, that only generate power when the wind blows, are chopping up birds by the thousand, just to make liberals feel good. And solar "farms" take precious water that might better go to farmers who desperately need it, just to keep them clean and make liberals feel good. This one's all "for the children," who must be protected from any choices their parents might make. After all, what do parents know?

Effectively they’re telling parents they’re not capable of being trusted with their children’s health. It’s Big Brother Knows Best vs. mom and dad.

They want to control what little Johnny and Susie drink with their kids’ meal. If restaurants don’t play along they could be fined up to $500. So now California isn’t just the nanny state, it’s also the bully state.

Parents are apparently still permitted to order a separate drink but the restaurant can’t market the drink on the kids’ meal.

Having water with that burger and fries isn’t going to solve our health problems. Although, they might as well ban juice given there are virtually no straws left for the little ones to drink out of their juice boxes with; since most major cities in the state have banned plastic straws.

[...]

The answer to everything liberals don’t like is to ban it, under the guise of doing something noble. In this case it’s your little ones’ health that’s on the line. Apparently you, mom and dad, are unfit to make healthy decisions for your kids. You need the nanny state.

[...]

Yes, you can decide what is best for your child and no, the state should not be deciding that. California should have bigger fish to fry than worrying about what your child drinks for lunch — like the state’s economy and securing our borders.

Boss Hogg Slams Pelosi and the Geriatric Demo Leadership

Jack Kemp

I found Hoggs remarks refreshing and candid. Minus the cursing, they are a valid criticism of the Democratic leadership. Bernie Sanders looks like he belongs in a theater box seat along with the two old Muppets, Statler and Waldorf.

But that doesn't mean Hogg has any better ideas on how to run the country in his Children's Crusade. He's going to read a "s**tload of books" in college. I suspect they won't include "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, "Utopia" by Thomas More, "The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer, "Darkness at Noon" by Arthur Koestler or any Ssolzhenitsyn book.

David Hogg Turns on Democratic Leadership: 'Pelosi Is Old' And Needs to 'Move the F**k Off the Plate'

Here's a quick snippet:

"The reason Republicans are successful right now is because they're empowering young people,"  Hogue argued. Older Democrats just won't move the f**k off the plate and let us take control. Nancy Pelosi is old."

There has recently been some clamoring within the Democratic Party for Pelosi to step down, particularly from Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA), the fifth-ranking House Democrat, who called for a "generational change" in the leadership, pointing out that the top three House Democrats, Pelosi, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) , and Clyburn, are all of the same generation, in their late 70s.

End

Hogg plans to run for office after college.

If You See Something..., You'll Probably Get Called a Racist

Jack Kemp

The money quote: It's easy to point to extreme examples, like the Vox-mentioned white graduate student who called campus police on a black female student napping in a common area, the two black men who had police called on them for playing basketball at a gym one of them was a member of, and the three black teenagers wrongfully accused of shoplifting at a St. Louis Nordstrom Rack, as evidence of some sort of societal racism at work that needs to be somehow rooted out with another draconian law.

Jack

If You See Something and Say Something, You'll Probably Get Called a Racist

Victor Stevenson - a black man who owns a San Francisco lemonade business called Gourmnade - was standing outside his shop last June before business hours, on the phone with his security company when four police officers approached him. Turns out, someone who thought Stevenson was breaking into the business had called the police.

Stevenson cooperated with the officers and, even by his own account, they were polite and professional to him. He had to provide identification and prove that he was indeed standing in front of his own business, but other than that nothing else was hurt but his pride.
But unfortunately, the race of those involved made what should have been a non-event a national story.

A double ban gets a double reversal

Paul Driessen

Department of the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke recently made several important decisions that have naturally raised the hackles of extreme environmentalists. One replaces "let them get overgrown and burn” mismanagement with policies that again actively manage and care for our national forests to prevent conflagrations, protect wildlife and their habitats, and save human lives and property.

A second decision reverses yet another Obama era sue-and-settle regulatory action that banned the planting of genetically engineered crops and use of our safest pesticides in certain wildlife refuges.

Andrew Boston pens a fine essay exploring John Brennan's intellectual roots in both Marxism and Islam.

From the essay at Gateway Pundit:

"the Marxist Social Labor Federation of Britain had adopted Karl Marx’s "Das Kapital” [Capital] as their infallible authority, "an article of faith from which they will permit no dissent, on pain of excommunication.” Vedder, a Professor of Church History at the Upland, Pennsylvania Crozer Theological Seminary, added that this British Marxist organization rejected the orthodoxy of its own votaries unless they professed as their creed, "There is no God, and Karl Marx is his prophet” — mirroring the Islamic declaration of faith, or "shahada”

Mom throws $25K prom party now accused of welfare fraud

Jack Kemp

There is a video at the AP website linked to in this article that shows this woman's son. Her family appears to be black.

From Townhall:

Mom Who Threw 6-Figure 'Black Panther' Theme Prom Party Featuring a Real Panther Now Accused of Welfare Fraud

A Philadelphia mom known for throwing back-to-back years of extravagant prom parties which cost upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars has been charged with welfare fraud, according to the Associated Press.

In 2017, she threw a Dubai themed party for local high schoolers that cost $25,000. Then, in 2018, she spent 6 figures on a prom send-off party in honor of the movie 'Black Panther.' She even brought a live panther to the party. At the time, Shuler said she "had a contest this year that asked kids in her North Philadelphia neighborhood to send their report cards and essays explaining why they deserved to have an epic prom send-off" and ended up inviting 24 kids. Neighbors and parents supposedly pitched in for the audacious affair. Shuler dressed up as "as Queen Mother Ramonda" and party guests were entertained by African dancers and people wearing "custom costumes."

But, on Tuesday Agust 14th, "The U.S. attorney's office in Philadelphia announced charges of wire fraud, theft of government funds and Social Security fraud." According to the government, "Shuler applied for benefits, describing herself as disabled and unable to work, but continued working â€â€ including operating a restaurant â€â€ costing the government more than $36,000."

How the Left Is Outsourcing Censorship of the Internet

Dana Mathewson

John Hinderaker, whom I'm proud to say is a resident of my fair city in Minnesota, and a mover and shaker of Minnesota politics (I met him personally when he moderated our local GOP caucus in 2016), is the senior partner (I believe) of the trio of lawyers who run the Power Line blog. In this piece from yesterday, he explains how the Left is attempting to deny a voice to any who oppose them.

Liberals control every newspaper in America, as far as I know, except the Manchester Union Leader. They control CBS, ABC, NBC and every cable network except Fox News. They control what is left of the news magazines, and pretty much every other magazine, too. Only talk radio and the pesky internet lie outside their grasp, so that is where they seek to impose censorship.

But they have a problem: the First Amendment. The government can’t suppress conservative speech on the ground that it is "hate speech,” i.e., something that liberals don’t like. That was recently reaffirmed by a 9-0 decision of the Supreme Court.

So liberals have outsourced censorship of the internet to the tech titans of Silicon Valley.

Unfortunately, most political conversation these days occurs not on the "free” internet, where independent sites like Power Line reside, but rather on social media–Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and so on. Other players include Google (in its search capacity), Apple, Pinterest, Spotify, etc. Happily–if you are a leftist–all of these tech companies are run by liberals. And because they are private companies, they are not constrained by the First Amendment. They can restrict or ban conservative communications on the ground that they are "hate speech,” or on no grounds whatsoever, with impunity.

And that is exactly what they are doing. This is a big topic. I brought it up this morning while hosting the Laura Ingraham radio show, and it blew up, ultimately consuming half of the three-hour show. Many aspects of the left’s outsourcing of censorship to liberal-run corporations need to be explored, but for now, this is an astonishing example: "Silicon Valley Strikes Back: Facebook Censors PragerU After Google Lawsuit.”

Dennis Prager is probably the foremost public intellectual of our time. His Prager University has been wildly successful. It brings a much-needed conservative antidote to the liberal nonsense to which so many Americans, especially young people, are subjected. That has made Prager a key target of the Left.

This is very, very serious business, folks! The Left has a lot of money available to it (George Soros and Tom Steyer spring to mind, and there are others), in addition to the fact that Google and the outfit that Timothy and I like to call Facebunk, or Fakebook, and a few other names that don't come from childrens' books just automatically don't want to support any ideas they didn't dream up themselves.

Tea for Two

A good article addressing the current problems in the Catholic Church is here: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2018/08/17/marc-thiessen-cardinal-wuerl-must-go.html This is from Fox News, so Tim should have no problem accessing it.

And Zachery Ty Bryan (Yep, that's how it's spelled), who played one of Tim Allen's kids on "Home Improvement" all those years ago, tells Hollywood to basically "shut up and act" and stay out of politics. Well, no, actually he tells them to "try and understand the other side," and he realizes who actually pays his salary when he's acting. Smart man -- he's no kid anymore. It's a good article, but he's setting himself up for slaughter. Well, at least James Woods will have company in the wilderness. Oil as a Women's Issue

Jack Kemp

One of the most little noted and insightful speakers at the recent Right Online conference in Minneapolis was the journalist and documentary filmmaker Ann McElhinney, Irish immigrant and co-creator of â€Å“Not Evil Just Wrong http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1493038/ - a film about the harmful effects of extreme environmentalism on poor people of the undeveloped countries â€" as well as (arguably) the poor in America. This self-described "Recovering European" who is "doing a job Americans just won't do" combined womenâ€â„¢s issues, feminist delusions and the history of technology to speak in the main ballroom, creating a great rant that can be seen on this page http://rightonline.com/beta/completed-sessions as the 23rd video on the webpage.

In noting (at the 4:53 mark in her speech video) that the feminists at the Netroots convention, located across the street from Right Online, McElhinney speculated they were talking (advocating) for solar and wind power. She then added, in rebuttal:

San Francisco introduces 'Poop Patrol' to clean up after its own crappy liberal policies

Dana Mathewson

I have a post up from a few days ago about this, but this opinion piece on Fox News hits harder, I believe.

The city of San Francisco just can’t seem to do anything right.

The city’s liberal policies designed to welcome the homeless and encourage illegal drug use is turning the city from a high-tech haven of beauty and cleanliness, to what UC Berkeley professor Lee Riley described as unsanitary conditions "much greater than communities in Brazil or Kenya or India.”

Congratulations lefties, the former crown jewel of the West Coast is now being compared to some of the dirtiest slums in the world.

Since the beginning of 2018, the city has received over 14,000 calls to the 311 service about feces on the sidewalks and in the streets. It has gotten so bad the city has lost conventions because of the filth.

It appears the city is tired of being the butt of national jokes and has decided to fight back. Local officials have announced yet another program to fix the problems the other programs caused in the first place. The "poop patrol” is expected to cost about $750,000 and employs six people with two trucks. No word if the trucks are hybrid.

Ouch! That last line stings!

It may seem like a joke, and making fun of San Francisco is all the rage, but there is a real health threat to the people of the city. Ask anyone that was deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq.

As a former contractor with the State Department in Kabul, Afghanistan, I can attest to the danger dried airborne fecal matter poses. The "Kabul Crud” hits just about every westerner that goes to the country usually within two weeks of arrival. The air in Kabul is not only filthy with dust, but it is also contaminated with dried fecal matter. This is what happens when you have an open sewer system, as San Francisco now appears to have.

Dr. Lee Riley has warned about the dangers the conditions in San Francisco are posing to the residents warning about rotavirus stating, "If you happen to inhale that, it can also go into your intestine.” The virus can be fatal.

Silicon Valley should stop ostracizing the military

Dana Mathewson, with hat tip to Eddie Engebretson

This article came my way a bit late, due to some of us old retired folks being busy as [insert your favorite "busy as" saying here]. It's from Aug. 8, and from the WaPo, no less. It's an opinion piece by Palmer Luckey, who is the founder and chief technology officer of Anduril Industries and the founder of Oculus VR; and Trae Stephens, who is Anduril Industries’ chairman and a partner at Founders Fund. This piece brings up some important considerations.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are right: A global leader in artificial intelligence will emerge, achieving enormous international clout and the power to dictate the rules governing AI. As Americans working in the technology industry, we disagree with those leaders only about which country that should be.

The world is safer and more peaceful with strong U.S. leadership. That requires the U.S. government to maintain its advantage in critical technologies such as AI. But doing so will be difficult if Silicon Valley’s rising hostility toward working with Washington continues. In June, Google — acceding to a protest letter signed by about 4,000 employees — announced that it would not renew a Pentagon contract for an AI program called Project Maven when it expires next year.

Other Silicon Valley companies, such as Microsoft and Amazon , have recently faced internal and external criticism for providing tools that aid U.S. law enforcement or border control.

Increasingly, Silicon Valley seems to think it runs the whole country. We've been hearing about their desire to control speech in this country. Not good, folks!

Please read the entire article. It isn't long. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/silicon-valley-should-stop-ostracizing-the-military/2018/08/08/7a7e0658-974f-11e8-80e1-00e80e1fdf43_story.html?utm_term=.ddec3a6908cf

Timothy Birdnow

My recent article in American Thinker on the continuing saga of the Mike Brown affair in Ferguson considerable digital ink was spilled by many who wanted to comment on the matter and a lot of great comments were left - both at AT and elsewhere. I thank all of you who took the time to leave your thoughts. But there was a refrain I kept encountering that goes straight back to a media lie told often enough it is not accepted; Ferguson was an impoverished hellhole. No, it was not and is not.

I grew up near Ferguson.
