I've been encountering quite a bit of Victor Davis Hanson lately, courtesy of my friends on e-mail, including Eddie, who has doubtlessly seen this one. What a pleasure it is. Now here's some of it on Urgent Agenda.
DECLINE OF ACADEMIC PRESTIGE " QUOTE OF THE DAY " AT 12:31 P.M. ET: Victor Davis Hanson gives us something to think about in his article on the usefulness, or lack of it, of prestigious academic degrees...especially in politics. From National Review:

In recent years, the US Environmental Protection Agency published over 25% of all pages of regulations issued by all federal government agencies, including 13 of the 28 most costly rules. In fact, EPA has been responsible for half of all costs imposed by federal regulations on American businesses and families – often for few or no actual environmental, health or welfare benefits.
The Trump Administration has taken important steps to rein in this Regulatory Hydra. However, another anti-business, hyper-regulatory administration could reverse those gains, especially because a single Administrator runs an agency that has shown a penchant for exaggerating risks and hiding or ignoring any scientific evidence that questions its claims and proposals.
In this 2-part series, environmental and regulatory expert Bill Kovacs presents insights into the problem and offers simple, practical steps that can be taken to ensure that EPA does not revert back to its old habits. Among the most important, the single administrator should be replaced by a five-member commission that will always have minority members with access to the same facts and science as what is used by those supporting regulatory overreach. That alone would help ensure the discussion, checks and balances that have long been missing in this process.

As a Minnesotan, I will add something Newt leaves out. Pawlenty sneaked in after the initial selection process and acted as if the job was his by birthright (remind you of anyone else?) simply because he'd already had it for two terms awhile back. Apparently this doesn't fall under the heading of "Minnesota Nice," and he got hammered, especially by the otherwise affable Jeff Johnson, who cast Pawlenty as Establishment, "go along to get along" and part of the existing problems. The first is that President Trump’s power in the Republican primaries continues to be extraordinary.
The second is that the continuing investment by the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) in state legislators is giving the Republican Party a farm team that is providing strong candidates for many key races.
In the process, Matt Walter and his team at the RSLC have devastated the Democrats’ farm teams. Democrats lost more than 900 state legislative seats when President Obama was in office.
Third, the radical extremist wing may do well in Democratic primaries but could pose big problems for the entire Democratic ticket in the general election.
The best example of the Trump effect on Tuesday was the upset victory by former Minnesota state legislator and current Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson, who had won the state’s GOP convention endorsement in the race for governor in June, over former Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Barry Casselman, one of the most insightful observers of Minnesota politics told me following Johnson’s win that the victory was a "big upset: The GOP-endorsed candidate for governor, Jeff Johnson, defeating former Governor Tim Pawlenty. Polls indicated that Pawlenty was ahead and better known, but Johnson ran social media ads asserting he was the only true supporter of President Trump in the race, citing a Pawlenty criticism of candidate Trump in 2016. Johnson apparently ran better-than-expected in outstate areas where Trump support is still strong.â€
Casselman’s other observations about Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa can be found here.
Pawlenty had been a very able two-term governor of Minnesota, and this primary was a further wakeup call about the mood of Republican voters. Johnson had campaigned in a RV with the slogan "Overthrow the Status Quo†emblazoned on its side. It was a compelling example of the impact Trump conservatism and demands for real change are having on the GOP.
That's true. It's hard to find reasons to attack Amy; she's made a career of being Little Miss Nice, a teflon senator who merely smiles, nods, and then votes the party line. Indeed, one doubts whether she's had a single original idea since she first gained office -- or even before that.Another big story coming from the Tuesday primaries is the potential general election disaster of radical extremist nominees on the Democrats’ general election campaigns.
In Minnesota, radical U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (someone who is comfortable wandering around in a T-shirt proclaiming "I don’t believe in borders†and advocating for a radical extremist Democratic Party) won the nomination for attorney general. Ellison is so far to the left of most Minnesotans that he may endanger the entire ticket for Democrats.
One Democrat from the iron range country of northern Minnesota commented to me that the Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) Party was being replaced by a Twin Cities Socialist Democratic Party and driving the rest of the state into an unofficial Republican Farmer Labor Party.
Ellison’s radical views already created the easy target of asking each Democratic candidate if he or she agrees with him on open borders, a $15 minimum wage, government-run health care, and other left-wing issues.
This is going to be a special problem for the appointed replacement for Sen. Franken, former Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, who is up for election this November. She co-sponsored an open borders bill with Sen. Diane Feinstein’s, D-Calif. Supporters of open borders are a distinct minority among ordinary Americans – even in traditionally liberal Minnesota.
Over the weekend a news story broke that Ellison was accused of physically abusing a former girlfriend. In a party that drove Al Franken out of the Senate and has become extraordinarily intense about men bullying or harassing women, Ellison is going to become a problem. There will likely be pressure for him to resign from the race. All Democratic nominees will be asked if they support him.
The fall campaign in Minnesota is going to be interesting. According to Casselman and other experienced observers, it has the potential to become similar to the kind of meltdown that cost the Democrats two senators and a governor in 1978 (although no one thinks U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is particularly vulnerable).

It’s horrible enough that the World Bank, multilateral development banks and radical environmentalist pressure groups actively deny the poorest families on Earth access to the energy, agricultural and disease control technologies that have made health and living standards so good and life spans so long for so many people. For the Obama U.S. Agency for International Development to use climate change, sustainability, AgroEcology and other Green fads to justify the same lethal policies is even more outrageous.
For the Trump USAID to perpetuate those carbon colonialist policies simply defies belief.
Our 3-part series demonstrates how these lethal actions violate common sense, common decency and human rights.
Part 1 explains how USAID uses taxpayer dollars to continue Obama era "low-emission development†ideologies, by refusing to fund programs that would actually lift people out of poverty and misery.
Part 2 examines how these USAID carbon colonialist policies fail on humanitarian and ecological grounds, and how the agency uses fabricated climate threats to justify imposing minimal energy and economic growth.
Part 3 shows how USAID policies perpetuate subsistence farming, malnutrition and disease in poor countries – and what Congress and the White House must do to end all these travesties

Governor Cuomo is shouting again. It must be time for reelection.I said that Andrew's father Mario was trying to bankrupt New York as governor, but he was not an evil person. I cannot say the same for the son, and believe me, I do not like to say such thing about anyone. Please read the rest of the article and draw your own conclusions. https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/08/andrew-cuomo-failed-governor-failed-politician/Queen Victoria complained of William Ewart Gladstone that he "speaks to Me as if I was a public meeting.†Andrew Cuomo has the opposite problem: He addresses public meetings as if trying to convince a recalcitrant octogenarian that the fire in his bedroom means he really, seriously has to leave. Never have so many friendly faces been so vigorously barked at by a man saying so little. In his mind, Cuomo is Pericles. Outside of it, he’s late-90s Al Pacino reading a bargain-basement script. "We’re not going to make America great again,†he bellowed this afternoon, to audible gasps. "America was never that great.â€
Cuomo is everyone and nobody all at once. "I am a Muslim,†he proposed last January, provoking widespread consternation. During the same speech he also became "Jewish,†"black,†"gay,†"disabled,†and "a woman seeking to control her health and her choices.†Conspicuously missing from his list was the one self-descriptor that explained his overzealous schizophrenia:"I am a white guy running for office in the Democraticparty in 2018.â€
Cuomo’s shape-shifting can take on a Python-esque mien. Attempting earlier in the year to draw a distinction between himself and President Trump, Cuomo launched squarely into the rehearsal of a one-man Four Yorkshiremen sketch. "I’m an immigrant,†he yapped, while keeping a straight face and hoping wildly that nobody could read his last name. Then, per the rules of the game, he upped the ante. "I’m undocumented,†he continued. "You want to deport an undocumented person, start with me, because I’m an undocumented person.†Perhaps, having been inspired by the ambition of this declaration, someone in the crowd shouted, "You were lucky!†or perhaps Cuomo saw the specter of Cynthia Nixon hovering sternly behind the TelePrompter. Either way, his peroration took the cake. "I was,†he explained, "raised by poor immigrants from South Jamaica.â€

Great news!
The ban against regular light bulbs was started under George W Bush, and was expanded under Obama.
The "old†light bulbs give a softer, warmer light, IMHO. And if the government won’t allow us to choose the kind of bulbs we want to have in our homes, what’s next? A ban on plastic straws?
Oh wait…
I'll tell you, folks, plastic straws I can live without, but the plain old incandescent bulbs were, well, a mark of civilization!
The article, via Daily Caller, is here: http://tammybruce.com/2018/08/report-president-trump-plans-rollback-of-incandescent-light-bulb-ban.html

Ellison Wins Minnesota AG Primary Despite Domestic Abuse Reports
DNC Deputy Chair and Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) won the
Democratic primary for attorney general Tuesday night despite the recent
domestic abuse charges against him. Over the weekend, his former
girlfriend Karen Monahan and her sons accused Ellison of physical abuse
and verbal threats.
They have yet to provide evidence though and Ellison denies the claims. Right now it's his word against theirs.
Ellison beat four other contenders Tuesday, including former Ramsey County Attorney Tom Foley, state Rep. Debra Hilstrom,
attorney and former state Supreme Court clerk Matt Pelikan, and former
state Commissioner of Commerce Mike Rothman.

Is the NFL fake news? Is there any real difference between the NFL and CNN?
Writing in American Thinker Tim Ziegler explains exactly why he has given up on the NFL.
Ziegler makes the obvious point first, then moves on to something a bit more, uh, well:
"It's not just the anthem controversy but that is the genesis of my disgust. I no longer trust the game. Let me explain. Following the Anthem protest in last season's Oakland vs. Washington game in September, 2017 it is alleged that the offensive line of the Raiders, upset at their quarterback's failure to support their protest, allowed him to be sacked and ultimately injured.
Now, it's not just the players’ political opinions that separate us, it is their potential lack of integrity that I question as well. Did this player drop the pass because of some other event? Did that player miss the tackle because he wants to send a message? What about that tide turning fumble? I no longer have to worry about it. But, you as a fan, player, coach, owner, sports-writer or announcer do. more...

Four years ago the trendy city of Ferguson, Mo. - an up-and-coming gentrified community in north St. Louis county - went up in flames after a very large black man assaulted a police officer, grabbed for his gun, and was shot to death. George Soros linked groups spent $33 million dollars shipping rioters into the community to loot and pillage. A grand jury was convened to assess whether Officer Darren Wilson should be charged with a crime in the killing, and this after a DOJ investigation found no substantial evidence to charge Wilson. The grand jury announced they were not going to indict Wilson, and St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCullough announced he was closing the case.
But that was then. more...
