Dana Mathewson and I were chatting about the Target store policy of allowing transvestites into the women's restrooms and changing rooms, and Dana asked the question of why were they doing it? Now, this was a rhetorical question not really intended for an answer, but rather was an expression of Dana's bafuddlement at the motivations of the Left, but I answered it anyway and it got me to thinking about the root of so many of our modern liberal motivations - particularly of the motivations of the young. Let me explain. David Horowitz, the Bolshevik turned Conservative icon, admitted that he and many of his revolutionary friends were not so interested in any real advancement of society or the welfare of individuals so much as shocking and offending the conservative elders. It was fun to horrify the stodgy old people who kept American values alive. Of course it also served a purpose, to break the will to resist, but a fair amount of the shocking behavior indulged in by the durg addled revolutionary hippie class of the sixties and seventies was primarily for the pleasure of the actors, plain and simple. It's FUN to mock people and destroy venerated things. The operative word is heterodoxy, a desire not to recreate so much as to simply destroy. It is what Lucifer did in Heaven, and what he did in the GArden of Eden; wreck the beautiful patterns and peaceful harmonies that the first Man and Woman enjoyed. Satan was a vandal and still is. He's the kind of guy who scrawls gang graffiti on the walls of builldings and subways, simply to make them ugly. It is this heterodoxy, this societal vandalism that energizes the modern Left. Whie the Progressives often claim they are fighting for the rights of people - in this case the rights of men who dress like women - the reality is they are fighting against the norms and traditions, the moral code of ethics, the governing system of thought that provides order and tranquility to American society. They want to wreck America, vandalize her until she becomes a no go zone, an anarchic place. East St. Louis writ large. Break America, break the American psyche, and then the "smart ones" will take over, and impose that which is pleasing to them on the masses. But so much of this is the simple, barbarian pleasure of destruction.

When I was in high school we had to read the Flannery O'Connor short story "Good Country People". At the time I thought it was a rather sad tale with a ridiculous ending, but the years imparts wisdom (we hope) and I now see it for a true masterpiece, a microscope into the thought processes of the Left.

Spoiler Alert!

For those who do not know the story, O'Connor tells the tale of Hulga, a nihilistic college girl who has become puffed up with pride over her "superior intellect" and educated status. Hulga (not her real name; she chose that as the ugliest name she could think of to annoy her mother) is home for summer vacation to her small farming community, where she sneers at the "Good country People", the locals she grew up with, salt of the Earth types she believes are total fools and ignoramouses. Hulga had lost a leg and was forced to use a prsthetic, and was bitter about that. She held God in contempt, embracing atheism and nihilism. She hated her mother. In fact, Hulga seems to pretty much hate everybody; she is completely wrapped up in her own anger and excessive pride.

In other words, she's a typical young liberal.

But she is soon to learn a bitter lesson. A young man comes to town, a Bible salesman, and Hulga decides to seduce him so as to corrupt him. Her plan is to lead him down a path of "enlightenment" until he eventually embraces the nothingness that she herself has embraced. Like Satan, she is not content to throw away her own soul, she wants to drag others down with her. Well, she succeeds at seducing him, and he steals her wooden leg while she sleeps. She manages to catch up with him (no easy feet since she only has one foot) and he unloads on her "you think you're so clever believing in nothing. Hell; I've been believing in nothing for years."

Hulga and the Bible salesman are flip sides of the same coin. Where Hulga was in love with herself in the Narcissus fashion the Bible salesman turned his own nihilism and narcissism into criminality, cynically taking advantage of the "good country people" who tended to be trusting, to believe in the goodness of everyone. Both were bitter, deviant psychological and spiritual vandals, but the salesman was more practical while Hulga was still naively pursuing her aggrandizement on a moral and spiritual level. The salesman was past that, having reached.

Isn't that much like the Progressive movement? The young are idealists, and they hate their parents and all their elders because they enjoy hating them. The delight in what they think are shocking and offending, not knowing that their parents often did the exact same thing. But the elder Progressives are often the more cynical, and self serving because they have come to realize the folly of the activism they pursued in their youth. Take the Clintons, for example; they still promote every leftist cause, but only if they can personally profit from it. Their liberal revolution doesn't come cheap; you have to pay to play with them. They are the types who would steal a young girls wooden leg if it came to that. They are users, and the young people starting out, full of idealism and anger and self-righteousness, are fodder for their deceptions. Both the Clintons and their marks ultimately seek to move things in the same direction, but the Clintons have learned to profit from their revolution. The young marks haven't yet figured out they are suckers.

The Clintons aren't the only ones. So many of the sixties radicals are now in positions to profit from their radicalism. Many are college professors, or run major corporations, or hold nice positions in government. They are there not because they were the best people for the jobs but because other good liberals worked long and hard to promote them to these positions. It works like a fraternal society, like Skull and Bones or the Freemasons, where a brother helps a brother. But the dirty little secret is some brothers make out quite well from the largess of the younger brothers and sisters, who are motivated primarily by anger and resentment of the rest of us. That anger and resentment comes easily to the young (who are seeking to assert their independence) and is fostered by school teachers and, perhaps most importantly, college professors who get them at a critical time in their lives and pervert their thinking, turn them against the parents and the society that worked so hard to give them opportunities and keep them safe. Like Hulga sought to do to the salesman, so too college professors seek to seduce the young, lead them to nihilism, to atheism or paganism (either way, away from Christianity or Judaism) and offer political activism as the substitute for their rejected beliefs. And, sadly, most parents think they are doing something good for their children when they send them to college. They aren't; they are sending their children into the maw of the Devil himself.

And THAT is why the Left promotes such radical ideas as gay marriage or transgenderism. Homosexuals make up a scant 3.5% of the population (most Americans surveyed think it is twenty to twenty five percent, thanks to false media portrayals) and 0.3% identify as transgendered. Despite that fact, the Left jumped on the former bandwagon twenty years ago, and began pushing the concept of legally-recognized homosexual marriages "marriage equality" as they called it, despite there being NO historical precedent for this - ever, in any culture in history - and despite the fact it froced our society to fundamentally redefine the meaning of the word marriage. This assault was not just on oen particular institution, but on our entire Judeo-Christian heritage, which discourages homosexuality because it is considered a sin, a violation of the Law of God and will, like Hulga , lead the innocent down the prity path to eternal damnation. So many on the Left, especially the young, jumped on board with it and not because they believed it was the right thing to do so much as it was an act of moral vandalism and would enrage the old fuddy-duds. Transgenderims is just taking this to the next level.

Gee, isn't that hillarious! Boy, I'll bet those bigoted old jerks heads really exploded over that! Ha-ha!

And unfortunately many of the Good Country People have allowed themselves to be hoodwinked, to accept only part of the Christian message, the part about love and forgiveness. They have forgotten that Jesus warned repeatedly about the horrible fate of Hell, and that He also called for His followers to remain firm in the face of corrupting influences. "If a town does not receive you shake the dust from your feet and move on" was His admonistion. Christians are supposed to love, but love is a gift offered. You don't beg someone to take a gift from you, and you don't beg people who don't believe to show up. If they don't want it they don't want it and you have to move on. Today most churches try to cajole and plead with people to come, and in the process they move to "modernize" which means they become like the world they are trying to overcome.

So many good people wind up accepting things that are anathema to God and to our cultural traditions. And don't think the Left isn't aware of how to manipulate this. That is why they keep pushing with these sexual things; they found a soft spot where the good people are willing to compromise. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

It's not, of course, just sexual misconduct that the Left pushes. They support acts of terrorism and murder by groups like Black Lives Matter, for instance, because it roils the culture and destroys the social order. Again, it's all about heterodoxy, about tearing down, about defecating in public (which is happening on a large scale in San Francisco and other leftist paradises these days), about despoiling and destroying. It's vandalism on an unprecedented scale.

So don't be surprised when liberals tacitly support murdering police, or bringing in aliens who are members of street gangs, or who are infected with all manner of diseases. Don't be surprised at decriminalizing public defecation or urination. Don't think it odd that liberals support legalizing narcotics but want to take away your pain killers or your occasional cocktail. Don't be puzzled when they attack Christianity as evil superstition while defending Jihad and promoting more Muslims into the U.S. It's all abotu destroying, smashing, pulling down, tearing up. Satan did it first, and they are simply doing the will of their father.
