Frederick Nietzche believed that Western science and scholarship would eventually collapse because it would begin undermining it's own foundation. He argued that eventually science would question the basic assumptions that underpinned scientific inquiry; that the Universe is knowable, that it is subject to reason and logic, that it works the same way when tested, etc. We are at that stage now, with many people believing science is just a white man's capitalist plot. Relativism and superstition had infected the soft sciences decades ago and are now starting to filter into the hard sciences, the very citadel of rationality. We are replacing the light of reason with magical thinking and the superstitions of identity politics. It's frightening, because it will lead inevitably to a dark age.
