The simple reason why the addition of new wind turbines, or new solar panels will increase the overall cost of electricity to the consumer -
The amount of power the extra wind turbines, or extra solar panels can be guaranteed to produce at too many points in time, is nowhere near the average amount of power they will produce. In fact at some points in time, the amount of power these renewable energy sources will produce is zero.
So for all the times these
renewable energy sources are not producing even just their average
output, or no output at all, we need to have ON-CALL electrical power
to make up the shortfall.
This might include on-call gas or nuclear powered generators, or forms of stored energy including extremely expensive pumped hydro, or batteries, or even connections to other electricity grids which will charge a premium for the urgently required, unplanned energy requirements. All these options need to be paid for, maintained and have personnel on hand.
This means that the alternative sources of power required to make up the guaranteed shortfalls in renewable energy will add significant costs to these supposedly cheap renewable energy options.
In this video Tony Heller demonstrates the dramatic variability of wind farm electricity production in the UK.
