1 I think you're gonna get a call for a royalty payment from Cole Porter's estate, Tim.

2 Well, he was so darned talented!!

3 That he was. So talented that he even sometimes gets credit for stuff he didn't write.

I remember somebody ginned up an awful pun that had to do with a train headed into Danzig some sixty years ago, getting there after dark, and once they got there the conductor said "Buy coal, Porter." Problem is he didn't write "Dancing In the Dark." That song was written by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz. Naturally, I felt honor-bound to point that out to the person who sent the pun to me, as I like composers and lyricists to get proper credit.

4 My mother absolutely adored Cole Porter. We played Begin the Begine at her funeral per her request.

Yeah; people should get stuff right if they are going to repost it. I usually say "from an unknown author" or "credited to Cole Porter" rather than just use the common wisdom.

5 My father used to complain that "Begin The Beguine" was just too damn long.

I've kidded for years that I was going to write a song called "End The Beguine." Also said I was going to write one called "I've Got It Good, And That Ain't Bad." (Won't mean anything to you unless you're into the Duke Ellington canon.)

There is, or used to be, a Chinese all-you-can-eat buffet here in town called The Song Long. Martha and I called it the Begin The Beguine. . .

6 AND speaking of proper credit, it's a good thing I'm never in the room when somebody gushes over Paul Anka for "writing" My Way and he doesn't set the record straight. He shamelessly takes the credit for it, insipid little jerk that he is. All he did was write the English lyrics for it. Somebody else wrote the melody and the original lyrics -- French, I believe.

7 Yeah; Begin the Beguine is long.  We played the instrumental version by Artie Shaw at the funeral; it was her favorite version anyway.

End the Beguine?  That's good!

The Song Long aka Begin the Beguine?  Cracked me up, Dana!

I didn't know Anka didn't write My Way.  So he was a plagiarist. Maybe Biden should use one of HIS songs!
