What Would Reagan Do?

Mark Musser

In 1976, I was 10 years old during the Ford-Carter presidential election. To this day, even as a boy, I remember Reagan’s speech that he gave at the Republican convention. I then told my grandpa that I would rather have him be our president than Carter or Ford. Grandpa, who was a staunch FDR Democrat, threw a bunch of cold water on my idea and gave me a lecture for such political apostasy. Yet Reagan would later win in 1980 and became the only president I have ever really supported with enthusiasm in all my years as a voter in presidential elections. Yet my whole family, all being Democrats, were very depressed the day after Reagan won the election in 1980 – but I was happy.

As the Iranians coughed up the hostages back in January of 1980, Reagan then sent a huge message to what we call the ‘deep state’ today at the very beginning of his presidency when the air traffic controllers went on strike. He said, "You’re fired!!” Reagan well knew that government workers who go on strike, who are already too well protected as it is, is an abomination. He then dispatched Giuliani to clean up the New York mafia (looking back - he should have sent someone to clean up the Chicago mafia as well) all the while in every speech/ interview he gave civics lessons on liberty to the American people which spoke directly to them all the good things they knew were true about America rooted in the wisdom of the founding fathers – a group of men who came together to give founding principles that lasted more than 200 years. Contrary to popular opinion, America is the oldest government on earth today. Most socialist governments come and go like the wind with revolutions going on all the time back and forth that accomplish nothing for its citizens – usually only more of the same just with different actors – or with destruction – as we are now finally witnessing in Old Glory itself as all good things must come to an end in a fallen world at some point in time. The verdict is out on whether or not America can survive over all that has happened for the last 20-30 years in particular. Things have declined so rapidly, particularly at the moral level, which is why we have drifted so leftward in our postmodern government idolatry. Yet, I still regularly pray for both spiritual and political repentance for our nation – which I have not seen much of, just more hardness of heart.

Reagan was saturated with the readings of Jefferson, Adams, Madison, and the other founding fathers of the American Revolution who fought, not for big government which always leads to totalitarianism in one form or another, but for small government and individual liberty, things that fewer and fewer people in America even understand anymore, let alone the rest of the world who looks at America’s politics with incredulity. Dr. Wayne House told me that Reagan’s office was littered with such books, including many serious theological works and biblical commentaries that were read and used. All this made Reagan’s mouth wise and disciplined, and he never let up on such things but kept the pressure on the Left by repeating them in different ways in different circumstances precisely because he knew people needed to be refreshed, reminded, and taught daily.

Contrary to popular opinion, our founding fathers were/are the true liberals – classical liberalism – liberalism, meaning ‘liberal’ freedom in religion, trade, commerce, and conscience – all gifts from the Protestant Reformation that finally worked itself out in real time against a backdrop of impoverished European feudalism. The slavery that was going on in the South at that time was not because of the Declaration of Independence, but in spite of it, which finally led to a tragic Civil War to stop it - the only nation in the history of the world I am aware of that tried to end the practice of a horrendous social custom so common in the world up until that time.

Not one president or presidential candidate since has figured this out even though such things are as plain as day – painfully obvious. So many politicians are lazy and undisciplined over such matters. They are also scared to say such things. Many have forgotten that Reagan was shot by a leftist radical. Remember too that Kennedy was also shot by a leftist radical. Kennedy was a conservative Democrat very similar to Reagan in many ways in terms of his public political platform. It was LBJ who started the welfare state and the so-called Great Society of government social engineering that is at the very heart of all the moral rot in America today wherein his war against poverty did nothing of the sort - but made things far worse by giving us huge government taxpayer debts that will never be paid back.

In 1980, Reagan won against Carter in an incredible landslide victory where he won 44 of the 50 states. What is more remarkable about this is that Reagan also did this against John Anderson as well, who was a Republican blueblood Rockefeller type (political saboteurs) that stole many Republican votes from the Gipper. Anderson was a liberal Republican who became an independent in the race to try and keep Reagan at bay, but this spoiler plan failed as do most liberal Republican chicaneries and schemes. Reagan won 51% of the vote against Carter’s 41% - a 10 point win in the popular vote, while Anderson took in about 7% of the vote. The next time around in 1984 against Mondale, Carter’s former Vice-President, Reagan won even bigger as Mondale won only 2 of the 50 states. The popular vote was 59% to 41% (this was the first time I voted). Over time throughout the 1980's, the news organizations finally realized that they had to give Reagan as little media time as possible because his speeches were too good and too persuasive. Reagan was as popular as ever when he left office.

Reagan also complained about the insanity of the big government budget over and over again throughout his entire presidency, but this was also something he actually preached on for some 30 years or more. While Reagan always gets heavily criticized for ballooning up the federal budget during the 1980’s, this was against his will. He hated unbalanced government budgets with a passion. People forget the Democrats were in charge of the Congress during his presidency, and Congress controls the purse strings. Yet Reagan’s persistence throughout his entire administration finally paid off big time in the 1990’s long after he was gone. Reagan’s influences were so great by this time that it even forced Mr. Playboy (who lost Russia in the 90’s by siding with the Germany/ Muslims against the Serbs) to sign a huge welfare bill. When he signed it, Clinton famously said, "The era of big government is over.” Clinton then also signed another critical bill which demanded the government have balanced budgets.

Think about that. Reagan’s influence was so great that even Clinton, with Bush in between, had to sign two huge conservative bills in the 1990’s. And the great economy of the 90’s was largely due to Reagan’s policies in the 80’s which finally came to fruition. Unsurprisingly, as such things are too good to be true, the Supreme Court stepped in and declared the balanced budget law unconstitutiona l. Clinton then finally saddled the American economy with too much government by the end of his disastrous presidency which Bush Jr. did nothing to ameliorate but even made worse. Now the budgets since that time are so reckless and dangerous with trillions of dollars of government taxpayer debt that will have to paid up at some point. Payday will come, and perhaps we are beginning to see that payday coming now with the collapse of some of our big cities who have gone to the government well that was empty for so long, all that we have now to support it is lawlessness, anarchy, madness, foolishness, and mindless mobs full of violence. In contrast to today, Reagan actually put a stop to the madness of the hippy mobs at Berkeley before they escalated into something far more dangerous.

Many are also unaware that after Reagan won Florida in 1980 in the Republican Primary, the Republican establishment knew their man, George Bush Sr., was done. They then walked up to Reagan and his staff and told them point blank that Bush Sr. WILL BE your vice-president – end of discussion. The House of Bush would later sabotage the entire Reagan ‘revolution” with their blue-blood Republicanism even though neither one of them would have ever been president without Reagan. Reagan was the conservative FDR for Republicans in the 20th century in that he gave Republicans 12 strong years. No other president (outside of FDR) in the 20th century, was able to hand-off another 4 years to the same party as Reagan did for Bush. Many criticize Reagan for selling out to the Republican globalists, but I am sure there are many things that went on behind the scenes that most of us are simply unaware of with regard to all of the dynamics of what went on in the White House during those times. In any case, thanks to the Bushes, both presidencies which were bad enough, they handed off to the public the two worst presidents in American history with Clinton and Obama. More to the point, the insane lockdown scenarios were conjured up during the Bush administration – another gift from the house of Bush to the American people.

Reagan was far from perfect, of course. His (second) wife was strange and mystical. She became a bigger liability as time went on. The Iran-Contra blew up in his face (I have no doubt in my mind that Reagan knew what Ollie was told to do – let’s stop wasting taxpayer money on such endeavors and save some money for a change, or they did not have the money to pay for something they knew was important ….). Reagan was too old as well to be president. He mellowed as he got older, and so probably gave up the fight on much of what later became known as globalism and the New World Order under Bush Sr. Yet, for all such faults, including his Hollywood background that I am sure had some seedy moments, he could give a clear grace gospel message better than most preachers I have heard over the years. He well understood he was a sinner saved by grace, saved by the cross alone through faith in Christ.

Here is the famous "Evil Empire Speech" given in 1983 taking on the Soviet Union at the time. This speech would play no small role in later providing the opportunity for me to become a missionary to the former Soviet Union, something which I still cherish after 25 years of service so far - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcSm-KAEFFA.

In between mission and pastoral operations, I also worked for a Reagan appointee, Tom McCabe, at the Building Industry Association for 10 years. It was here that I got a real political education on how evil politics truly is, how naturally tilted the political landscape is toward the Left, how difficult it is to try and take on the behemoth of big government idolatry together with the sacrifices of reputation (through false charges by the government and pro-government lackey media) that must take place in order to do it. Long before people complained of Obama using the IRS as a political weapon against conservatives, this was routine for Tom and BIAW under his leadership, and being sued into submission was simply a way of life. Worst of all was watching the so-called pro-business Republican lobby groups routinely sell out small business to save their own personal skins that always sabotaged most everything Tom did trying to support and lobby for those small businesses. Today, the business community of downtown Seattle is basically destroyed, but the foundations of all this was built in the 1990's and 2000's when they refused to fight always siding with foolish Democratic utopianism and machinations that have nothing to do with the real world. We also found out how conservative Democrats are much preferred to liberal Republicans because conservative Democrats are conservative in critical areas, whereas liberal Republicans are liberal in critical areas. Last but not least, Tom and the BIAW helped Washington State elect for the first time in its history a conservative Republican Governor in 2004, which was then stolen. The Democrats kept counting votes until they won. The third time was the charm. Below is an apropos article Tom wrote (I helped Tom on this article too!) in 2005 when many Seattlelites complained of the Steelers who stole the Superbowl from the Seahawks through questionable and legalistic calls just like the gubernatorial election. When the Democrats saw that a real Republican could actually win in Washington State, it was then an all out war against Tom and the BIAW. They then shoved through mail-in balloting that has since sealed the fate of Washingtonians to Democratic political rule that can now do whatever it wants to without consequences. The biggest city in Washington State, Seattle, no longer has any police left that are funded.

Here is Reagan's speech given at Moscow State University in 1988 where he told the students about the forthcoming information revolution that will soon completely change the entire world. He was so gracious to the students and faculty in his presentation that betrays the stereotype where the globalists routinely criticized him for being a war monger - which was not true - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lutYGxMWeA.

1 I'm glad you point out LBJ's "negative contributions." He and BHO were, and remain, prime contributors to the "systemic racism" which, if it exists at all, plagues our country today; though a number of other Democrats can proudly claim a role in it. The late Sen. Robert Byrd was a Klansman and was proud of it. How many of today's ill-educated kids firmly believe the Klan was Republican, thanks to union teachers?

2 That they do Dana, or they believe in this "big switch" thing which tries to claim the Klan joined the GOP during Reagan's tenure. It's a lie and has been disproven, but you can't fix stupid.
