Most people, when observing the use of the word SMART in reference to community planning or as an attached label to power meters and home appliances , believe it refers to "intelligent," "unique," or "scientific" new ideas for protecting the environment and cutting our carbon footprint. In fact, use of the word SMART is actually engineering lingo meaning: S-Specific M-Measurable A-Achievable R-Relevant T-Time Oriented. In other words, use of the acronym SMART means a controlled outcome in a specific period of time.
