Here is an interesting bit of information the national press likely will not divulge; the Waffle House shooter in Nashville was indeed mentally ill - but also liked to dress in women's clothing. According to the Belleville News Democrat:

"# June 2017 — Police reported Reinking broke into a pool in Tazewell wearing a pink woman's housecoat and underwear. He yelled at lifeguards when they told him to get out and flashed his genitals.
# June 2017 — Employees of the construction company Reinking's father owns said directly before the pool incident, Reinking approached them wearing a pink dress and holding a rifle. He yelled at the employees before throwing the rifle in his trunk and speeding away. "Apparently the rifle stayed in the trunk of the vehicle during the incident," the police report read."

Now Reinking was pretty clearly schizophrenic; he thought Taylor Swift was stalking him, believed people were outside his home barking like dogs, and believed he was under constant surveillance. But the dress issue? Doesn't that suggest that crossdressing and mental disease go hand in hand?

For the record, this man was from Illinois, a state with one of the strictest gun control laws in the country, and he still managed to use weapons he owned to shoot up a breakfast shop. What does that say about gun control?

The fact is, Illinois is a thoroughly Progressive state, and doesn't want to stigmatize the insane (or criminal) by singling them out for such things as confiscating their weapons. It's part of the endless effort by the Progressives to normalize abnormal behavior. They started this in the eighties, with demands to de=institutionalize psychotics. They've done this in schools, mixing troubled children into the general pool. They've done this with the PROMISE program to keep minority children out of jail, no matter what dangers they pose to other school children or the community at large. And here we have a prime example of liberal rationalizing, with demands for strict gun control for law abiding people but a reluctance to take weapons away from the insane.

After all, aren't the insane an oppressed minority, too?

But freedom, to the liberal, is being able to do whatever you want no matter how crazy and be treated like everyone else. Want to walk around in a woman's dress? You are "transgendered" rather than "cisgendered". Want to dress up like a baby and poop in your pants? You are disabled, or someone who chooses an alternative lifestyle. Think you are an animal or that your leg doesn't "belong to you"? Who are WE to judge!

And so as America descends into madness based on the teaching that reality is whatever you want it to be, we suffer from increasing acts of violence and insanity by the mentally ill, and the left demands we take guns away from law abiding citizens - and in the process disarm them so they can't shoot back when some nut like this fellow tries to murder as many people as the voices in his head demand.

That's the trouble with liberalism; it seeks to reinvent the wheel, creates new problems, then tries to fix those problems with new, crazier ones. The liberal never goes back to first principles to see what worked and why. Instead, he is forever tampering with success, until he succeeds in breaking it.

That's why this man had his guns to shoot at diners; they see in people like that fellows well met.
