Uvalde in Social Media Monitoring Program

Steven Schuler

REVEALED: Uvalde school district was part of AI program that rooted out potential mass killers and monitored social media for threats and potential shooters

seems that the AI program failed rather spectacularly here.

1 Whether that's true or not remains to be seen. But electronics won't keep school kids safe. The gunman apparently entered the school through an unlocked door to the teachers' parking lot. They obviously learned nothing from other such shootings. The teachers' unions don't like the idea, but schools MUST become "hard targets" if we are to minimize these incidents.

2 Agreed Dana. Much of what is being proposed these days only works if all the pieces work - and if those monitoring the situation take it seriously. That last is the key problem.

I wonder; did that school security guy have standing orders not to take action in the event of an active school shooter situation? His behavior suggests to me he was following his training.

There is one example of a reform worth making. Arm these guys and tell them to take action. I know; the school district doesn't want a minimum wage guy shooting all over the place and maybe killing kids. So they prefer to let a shooter do the killing so they minimize legal liability.

I once said in a post I made at Tea Party Nation that they should put George Zimmerman at the door of every school. That was one of the highest ranking posts at TPN ever; Right Wing Watch linked to it and all the leftists exploded on it (proving I touched a nerve). But the logic is sound; you need people who will take action, not sit and wait for help.

I wonder about non-lethal means as well. Something as simple as setting off the fire sprinkler system could slow the attacker. Maybe strobe lighting could be installed; it would make it hard for the attacker to aim and shoot.

You could also use flash grenades aka "flashbangs", although those are a bit dangerous and could seriously injure children.

All that would be needed would be for the guard to push a panic button.

Yes, it would traumatize the kids. But how much more traumatized would they be watching their classmates die?
