Are you  perhaps thinking of Pete Townsend? Jerry Garcia was the Grateful Dead. (I was never impressed with Townsend as a guitarist; he was flashy and theatrical but not really all that talented.)

3 Oops, you're right. I never listened to any of those rock groups anyhow, so I don't know WHO's WHO. I listened to the jazz guitarists, like Barney Kessel, Les Paul, Johnny Smith, Charlie Byrd, etc. I'm one of those guys who insists that "rock" and "music" should never be used in the same sentence.

I was at a jam session in New York City (listening, not playing) when Barney Kessel walked in to play, and said "I'm going to play 'I've Thrown a Custard In Her Face.'"
