Trump Picks William Barr for AG

Timothy Birdnow

President Trump will appoint William Barr as Attorney General. Barr served in that capacity under George H.W. Bush.

According to Fox News:

"Barr led the Justice Department under Bush from 1991 to 1992, and currently works at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm in Washington.

Prior to serving under Bush as attorney general, Barr was deputy attorney general and led the Office of Legal Counsel.

According to his biography, he served in the Central Intelligence Agency from 1973 to 1977. Democrats have cried foul ever since the appointment of Whitaker, who now oversees Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, as acting attorney general. Several Democratic senators filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging the constitutionality of Whitaker’s appointment, arguing it is in violation of the Constitution’s appointments clause.

It's unclear whether Barr will garner bipartisan support given the politically charged environment, though Trump urged a swift confirmation process."

End except.

Sounds like another RINO to me. When someone gets "bipartisan support" these days you had better watch out. And this guy comes out of the CIA, which puts him squarely in the "Deep State" category. These are the very people trying to destroy Donald Trump (which may be why he chose a former member).

A few details about Mr. Barr.

He is from New York City (doesn't Trump know ANYONE from the Midwest?). He attended the radically leftist Columbia University for his undergrad and George Washington University for his J.D. His mother was on the faculty of Columbia, by the way. He majored in Government, a bad sign.

He clerked for Judge Malcolm Wilke at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

He served on the domestic policy staff of the Reagan White House. after that he spent nine years working for Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge, a law firm specializing in global business.

Although it was after Barr's time, SPP&T worked pro-bono to undermine the Trump Administration. From Wikipedia:

"Worked pro bono in conjunction with Columbia Law School’s Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic to file an amicus brief in Karnoski v. Trump challenging the prohibition on military service by transgender people.

Worked pro bono on behalf of Human Rights Watch, Immigrant Legal Resource Center and Freedom for Immigrants, to file an amicus brief in a high-profile case addressing the "tragic state” of immigration detention centers in California

As Guantanamo Bay attorneys, lead counsel on Al Odah v. United States, one of the two lead cases arguing for the habeas corpus rights of Guantanamo Bay detainees.[34] On June 12, 2008, the Supreme Court ruled that Guantanamo Bay detainees have rights under the Constitution to challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts.

Co-authored a key amicus brief on a pro bono basis on behalf of more than 60 Asian-American Bar Associations and community groups in California's historic same-sex marriage case, In re Marriage Cases.[35] The California Supreme Court overturned California's ban on gay marriages on May 15, stating that depriving gays and lesbians of the same rights as other citizens is unconstitutional"

End excerpts.

We must hope Barr isn't still chummy with this bunch.

When working for the Bush Administration Barr took a hard stance on Cuban inmates who seized hostages while under deportation orders at Talladega prison. His deft handling of this (he had the prison assaulted and taken with no loss of life) led Bush to appoint him Attorney General. During his confirmation hearing he admitted he believed there was no right to abortion in the Constitution, something that impressed Joe Biden (his honesty, not his beliefs.) This is another bad sign; the Democrats did not resist his appointment at the time.

Barr was approved unanimously.

As AG Barr was considered quite conservative. He was in favor of stiffer prison sentences for repeat offenders, a good sign given that Trump has been making noise about prison reform.

After his term at AG he was appointed by Virginia Gov. George Allan to oversee criminal reform, to abolish a lax parole system.

He was an independent director of the left wing Time Warner.

He worked for Kirkland & Ellis, a law firm that Represented Jeffrey Epstein in a case of sex-trafficking with minors. Brett Kavanaugh and Ken Starr also worked there, as did Robert Bork and John Bolton as well as a host of other government people, both Democrat and Republican.

He worked to keep people infected with HIV from immigrating to the U.S. prior to becoming Bush's AG. In fact, he argued for putting infected Haitians at Guantanamo Bay.

He also think abortion is not inherent in the Constitution, a fact that is fairly plain.

BUT

He argued against Donald Trump's call to prosecute Hillary Clinton. He stated:

"I don’t think all this stuff about throwing [Hillary Clinton] in jail or jumping to the conclusion that she should be prosecuted is appropriate. But I do think that there are things that should be investigated that haven’t been investigated.”

Again, not a good sign. Hillary clearly warrants investigation.

So what can we draw from all this? I think this fellow is a question mark. In modern politics appointing a question mark is often a bad idea. Even a good conservative like Jeff Sessions proved to be a disloyal and weak AG once he assumed office. Why? I rather suspected Sessions was either being blackmailed or threatened. For whatever reason he simply hid inside his office and did nothing. It wasn't just the Russia Probe recusal; he was a miserable failure as AG, never showing his head. It was as if he was hiding.

So a man like Barr worries me. He comes from inside the belly of the Beast, and is clearly a member of the Swamp.

If personnel is policy, President Trump is just another swamp rat with bad hair.
