It's not as bad as it seems to someone who's never had it. Both my Chevys have it; it just takes some getting used to. At least on our cars, it shuts off when all the engine parameters determine it should -- not at every light. And it stays off for an absolute maximum of two minutes, so you won't freeze in the winter. If your A/C is running, at least on MAX, it's very unlikely that the engine will shut down.
And when it is on shut-down, when the light changes and you want to go, believe me, you hit the accelerator and the engine starts right up and you GO -- because we're talking, at least with my cars, about a turbo-charged engine. Yes, there's the initial "turbo lag," but even if the engine is already running you have to deal with that.
I can't say what kind of wear and tear it puts on your engine. I DO assume it predicates a fancy big expensive battery, unlike a normal car battery.
