Top of the Food Chain

Timothy Birdnow

Doesn't the Spanish government have anything at all more pressing than wasted food? I mean, they are being reconquista'd and here they are sweating over tossed grapes and the like. So typically socialist; everything is a government matter and the public and business has no say.

Il cibo non si butta. Punto.

Pena? Multe salatissime fino a 500 mila euro.

You don't throw food. Period. Spain will soon be a reality: from 2023, thanks to a powerful anti-waste plan involving medium-sized and large businesses will be "forced†to turn unsold fruit into jam or juice. While restaurants will be obliged to get the "Doggy bagâ€. These are just some of the proposals in the bill under consideration. A few weeks ago, the socialist government led by President Pedro Sánchez approved a project that points to a single objective: don't throw away food with the ambition of making schools in Europe.

As explained by the Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Luis Planas, the new tool adopted by the Government will modify the processes of the food chain in the points where it is most inefficient. But, inspired by the circular economy, the "bill on the prevention of loss and food waste†is also significant on the ethical level, since it includes collaborative projects between restaurants, neighborhood organizations and banks I got groceries. Worth it? Hefty fines up to 500 thousand euros. Suffering numbers are actually ruthless: 1,300 tonnes of food (31 kg per capita) that are thrown away by citizens every year.
