The Uncreating of the American Mind

Timothy Birdnow

Our friend and contributor William Been sent me an editorial by Tom DeWeese about the inability of the young to think. DeWeese argues that the Left has purposely dumbed down American kids, making them incapable of thinking - as opposed to feeling - and that this is intended to break the "chain of contagion as it were, of American culture and tradition. I believe DeWeese is correct.

Read the article here.

Deweese also includes a lecture given by a law professor in Alabama where he makes it plain to his students they have been sorely miseducated and will have to learn to think before they can become educated in the Law.

I absolutely agree with DeWeese.
The Left has labored to make Americans, particularly young Americans, incapable of actually thinking. It's a very clever trick, too, because they have these kids believing THEY are the smart ones, the truly educated, who know so much more than the old timers. The goal has been to puff up their self-esteem (remember when that became the big goal in education back in the '80's?) while reducing the amount of knowledge they possess - and the accuracy. Feeling, too, were pushed in the past as was the "value" of expressing "thoughts" in a child's own vernacular. All of this was done, and in my opinion intentionally, to destroy critical thinking and erase the past, thus disrupting the communication of culture and heritage that naturally occurs. Couple that with the breakdown of the family starting in the 1970's so that children wouldn't receive their cultural heritage from their parents and with the explosion of immigration - both legal and illegal - thanks to changes in immigration laws and an unwillingness to enforce the laws on the books and you had a mass influx of people not educated in America and American cultural values. Great fodder for the plans of the social planners, who wanted to fundamentally remake the country and now had a more pliable generation. All of these things form a kind of Venn diagram of ignorance intended to open the young to the kind of societal change the Left has always sought. Each of these things overlaps with the other to move America away from her founding and toward the internationalist, socialist utopia.

And all the while we continue to increase the among of formal education required of children, thus further removing them from the influence of their "atavistic" "reactionary" parents. The kids spend more and more time in school and must go many more years (racking up ridiculous bills in the process and enriching the Leftist educators and professors) for the purpose of being miseducated and indoctrinated.

I don't believe any of this was by accident.

The internet hasn't helped us, either, although the Left couldn't foresee it arising they certainly profited by it as kids now are so immersed with online pseudo information and communications that they are losing touch with reality. The Left had promoted just this sort of thing with other mediums; television, movies, magazines, etc. but now they have an interactive outlet that is so much more capable of getting at the basic thoughts and assumptions of people that they can mold and twist them in ways we never thought possible. It was a Godsend to them (well,, a Devilsend, anyway.) I fear that many young people are losing the ability to tell reality from fantasy, and their ability to choose what they want to believe from a cafeteria menu of images and ideas online make it even harder for them to learn to think, which is, of course, ultimately based on the ability to comprehend and understand reality.

DeWeese and that Law Professor MacLeod in the article are right on the money with all this.

These days so many confuse raw intelligence with the ability to think. Many of these kids are intelligent but have no idea how to actually think. That HAS to be taught. But not only is it not taught but it is discouraged through political correctness, which sets strict codes on what to say and what to think. The end result is a country of sophomores, of "wise fools" who have had their egos inflated so they think they know everything when in fact they know very, very little and will never learn because they have been told ignorance is Knowledge, as was taught in the Orwell novel 1984. The greatest folly is to misbelieve you are wise. America promotes that.

I'm not sure how to fix this either, because the system is so exclusive. People who understand the stupidity of this are shut out of academia and the educational system, thus preventing any fix and creating a self-perpetuating system. My brother, for example, is eminently qualified as an historian but can't get a tenure track position at any university because he doesn't buy into the system - and it is easy for the system to find that out in the information age. He's been piddling around with adjunct work and has seen jobs open up, only to be filled by people writing theses about pioneer women cooking or lesbians in the old West or whatnot. How can we fix the country if we won't acknowledge the problem?

Of course, to acknowledge the problem we must think it IS a problem, and I fear that the Left has done this all on purpose. It is part of creating the World Citizen.
