The Oscar De La Hoyas

Timothy Birdnow

Maybe they should change the name to the Oscar De La Hoya's?

For those who don't know, Will Smith hit host Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife's lack of hair. (He said she would be playing G.I. Jane in her upcoming film.) Smith's wife has an illness that made her lose her hair.

If I had known I could see one of the glitterati  in fisticuffs I would have watched the stupid show. The can assure a regular audience if they do.

I remember Jerry Springer when he first started his show; he wanted to do substantive talk. But his show was floundering so he came up with the crazy fistfighting and the rest. Maybe that's what the Oscars are doing?

1  Play fighting to get attention. How grownup of the spoiled betters!

2 The general impression is that Smith was really angry and the slap was real. He and Rock have had a feud for a few years. Smith may have finally "gone around the bend" over the fact that his wife can sleep with anybody she wants to, but when somebody "gets on her case" about anything, Will is expected to step in and defend her "honor." I'd have told her to stuff it, years ago.

I'm with Will on this one, although I also admire Chris Rock for handling it the way he did.

I was surprised to learn that the Academy Awards are even still televised, considering their lousy audiences over the last few years.

3 All I saw of it was the slap Dana so can't judge if it was fake or not. If you think it was legit I will take your word for it.

It is still childish all the way around though.

4 Our friend Bob Redmond watched the video a few times and concluded that it was fake -- Rock acted as if he was expecting the slap ahead of time.

Jack says Rock is a loudmouth a**hole. I don't know; he's not on my radar screen. But it's unfortunate if Smith feels under obligation to "protect" his wife's honor when she obviously has none.

5 A lot of people on Facebook think it was staged. I don't know; I didn't really watch it and do not intend to waste much time. I don't think much of either men.

I've heard Rock is a braying jackass. I'm not overly familiar with his "work" but do know he is big on insults. If anyone is to blame it is the people who made him host of the Academy Awards. That used to be a dignified event. They knew what they were getting.

Good thing Alec Baldwin wasn't up for an award; someone would take a gut shot!
