McMaster is a Lt. General in the army, and a historian to boot. He wrote a book called "Dereliction of Duty" in 1997, which was an outgrowth of his dissertation. In the book he said everything that was true about Vietnam, that the liberals have tried to squelch, namely that LBJ and MacNamara were amateurs who had no idea what they were doing, and that we could have won the war easily by 1965, if we had fought properly, and correctly. McMaster was warned that writing this would have a deleterious effect on his career, but he did so, anyway. The shadow liberals have tried to smear him ever since, but his heroism in Iraq and Afghanistan has outshone his critics. He is the man for the job!
