The Jilted

Timothy Birdnow

Here is my attempt at Poe-style poetry for Halloween. I'm late with it; I just wasn't completely satisfied with it and had some surgery to perform. At any rate it's creepy; I hope you like it!

The Jilted

In the soil of faded dreams and pointless schemes
where what's left winds up below
and the waters flow in salty streams
the stoney trees grow neatly in a row

Her lover there in silence waits
there beneath the snow
beyond the black and rusted gates
the winds they howl and blow

She trudges through the muffled field
in silence like one long asleep
at the spot she bends and kneels
her head is bowed, in silence she weeps

an idol she made of her love for a man
her lust and desire led her astray
she surrendered her virtues for warm shifting sand
then one terrible moment he threw her away

she had no idea how hard it would kick
how much it would flow
how much she'd get sick
now from her he never would go

The deed how it mocked her in cruel taunting way
and she knew without question what lay in store
she dared not to leave but she dared not to stay
so she set forth her course for that dim, foggy shore

one dark night long ago
her bed became damp
and stained a bright crimson
when she snuffed out her lamp

Now she wanders the earth in eternal despair
neither living nor dead, like a leaf in the air
awaiting her lover who is never there
all her hopes and her curses as dead as her prayer

every evening she comes to wail and to mourn
and sometimes you hear her in an oncoming storm
clinging to something she can never again hold
who lies 'neath the ground, so silent and cold

the saddest part of this miserable tale
is never is forever, forever she'll wail
her arms always empty, her winds without sail
she sealed her fate when her coffin was nailed.

In the dark of the night you might hear her despair
the endless torment of an endless nightmare
her wails of anguish too much to bear
so stay far away, don't you come, don't you dare
