Liberalism and Conservatism once shared many common truths, at least in the US... Then there's Leftism which shares none of those common truths. Traditional Liberalism is almost a dead ideology, replaced by the Leftist Model of thinking which I find rarely rational and never workable for the benefit of the people in general nor the Government, in particular.
To be a Leftist you must embrace what rational men would view as absurdities...a
That fundamental principle being the idea that the individual is,
according to his or her conscience, able to determine the direction of
their lives without undue coercion from the State, or the use of the
power of the State to impose a standard above and beyond the scope of
individual conscience dictated by one overwhelming ideology without
room for dissent.
Tim adds:
What was once liberalism is now considered conservatism. The Left
basically drove out the liberals, who now make common cause with
conservatives. Actually, I would argue there are few old line
conservatives left, most modern conservatives are fighting to preserve
what were once considered liberal values. You don't find anyone wanting
to reimpose monarchy or the Council of Trent or whatnot. The liberals
got mugged by their own views of progress and enlightenment, I fear.
Now there is Leftism and the rest of us. We are a coalition of
different views, which is why it is so hard to mount a defense against
the Left; we have to get people with differences to come together for a
common cause, something the Left finds far easier since they all pretty
much are sailing in the same direction.
