The Covid Bail Con

So now the authorities in blue states are planning another shutdown to "fight the virus". They want quarantines, social distancing, mask mandates, and restrictions on group sizes - just in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years!
The purpose of all these things was never to "fight the virus" but to "flatten the curve" meaning buy time for the medical people. It was understood at first that any viral pandemic must run it's course. Until enough people have become sick or a vaccine artificially produces antibodies it will keep spreading. Shutting down the economy does little.
All of these measures being imposed are like trying to bail out a sinking boat with a bucket. The wizards of smart think if you draw a bucket and dump it overboard the section you just bailed will stay dry. They don't understand that the hole in the hull is still leaking.

I believe the "was never" is not quite correct. As best I recall that was the initial purpose back in March, but since that expired, latest calls for precautions are simply about "saving lives" and "preventing the spread" of the virus. I have not heard anything about "flattening the curve" since April or so.
I believe the "herd immunity" thing has also gone away, and is now regarded as a heartless and inhumane concept, unworthy of any civilized government as it can only be achieved with massive death counts. The savior today is testing in the short term and vaccines in the long term. I have never understood how testing prevents anyone from catching a virus, but then I'm not a Democrat.

You're right Bill and that's my point; this thing has subtly changed over time, and there was a purpose to altering the debate terms.
And there is nothing heartless about accepting the fact you aren't going to stop any deaths. As you say, testing does nothing but find out if someone is already sick. And a vaccine is part of herd immunity if one is available. There are diseases we have had for generations that we have no vaccines for. Of course they are saying we have a couple of them now for Wuhan, but who knows the side effects? People may have mutant kids after getting this, for all we know.
