No violence. Every social movement, even the United States itself, has been led by individuals engaged in non-violent civil disobedience. Nine rescuers at the Washington Surgi-Clinic in October 2020 walked faithfully in Dr. King’s footsteps. They forced doors to open and close, even using chains, but they did no violence. No assaulting, no firebombing, no smashing of windows, no damaging of property. All of those behaviors have been associated with unendorsed extremists in every social movement including the antiabortion movement and the 1960’s struggle for African American civil rights.

Two billion dollars in property damage and two dozen deaths were associated with Black Lives Matter activities. A burning limousine and smashed store windows were visible right next to the Trump Inauguration route in January 2017! But no one even conceived of a particular federal law and particular penalty (11 years in prison) which targets particular groups based upon a particular political message. And that’s exactly what the 1994 Clinton-signed Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act inflicts. That’s what my friend Jonathan is facing this week in Federal District Court in Washington, DC.
