Looks like Donald Trump, rather than just getting rid of Obama-era emissions standards for automobiles, has simply decreased the incremental downgrading of levels permissible.
Trump finalizes fuel standard for cars, setting up a showdown with California

The Trump administration announced on Tuesday its long-anticipated plan to lower fuel efficiency standards for automobiles, setting up a showdown with California that has sought to set its own stricter emissions standards to fight against climate change.
The final rule decreases standards set forth by the Obama administration in 2012, but increases them from a proposal first set forth by President Donald Trump in 2018.
Trump would now increase carbon dioxide emissions standards by 1.5% each year until 2o26 – a shift from his initial proposal to freeze standards at 2020 levels.
But it is still too low for California’s regulators, who have proposed far more stringent standards and characterizedthe prospect of a 1.5% annual increase as "not nearly enough” to mitigate the worst effects of rising greenhouse gas emissions on the climate.First, hasn't the Coronavirus pandemic shown the need for MORE global warming? Viruses thrive in cold weather, something we will have if we keep trying to "defeat" climate change.
Second, why the hell is Trump caving on this? He's still allowing the Obama-era measures to force manufacturers to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases aka carbon dioxide despite the physics of the problem. This is madness, and Trump ought to know that caving on this sort of thing is just asking for trouble.
Trump administration officials have worked on the lengthy rule proposal for over a year and claim it strikes a balance between environmental and economic concerns.
Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler said that the new rule would overturn former President Barack Obama’s "unachievable” standards and provide consumers with cheaper, safer cars at a time when Americans are driving older vehicles than ever before.
"The newer vehicles will be better for the environment than the vehicles they replace,” Wheeler said. "The lack of fleet turnover creates a host of problems, the most important of which is passenger safety.”Chao is Mitch McConnell's wife, by the way, and is only there as a sop to her RINO hubby. She's very much a RINO and on board with Global Warming alarmism.
This is a result of losing Scott Pruitt at the EPA. The media drove him out of office with baseless accusations of scandal, and Trump let them do it. Now he's got one of the swamp negotiating for him, and it should surprise nobody that America is going to get this crap rammed down our throats. Cars will wind up costing more. So too will fuel.
Donald Trump was supposed to drain the swamp. So why is the swamp still dictating policies like this?
