I just found this article from Der Spiegel via a link from wikipedia.
Now, I remember personally being called a conspiracy theorist for suggesting that the claimed "fertilizer" stored at the port was in fact explosive, and destined to be used as explosive.
At the time, the official story was that the material was intended to be fertilizer. We now know this to be a lie.
There were two possible destinations for the material, both of which involved it being used as explosive.
Officially it was headed to an explosives manufacturer in Mozambique. Unofficially, it looks very possible that the plan was to get it to Beirut and then pull strings at official levels that resulted in the explosive being unloaded at Beirut where it could potentially be disappeared.
