Strangling on Red Tape

Timothy Birdnow

The Trump Administration is being blamed for not getting test kits ready for this Wuhan virus.

But why are they being blamed?  The reality is, there was a fight between the CDC and the FDA. Apparently regulations kept the CDC from moving forward.

If Regulations have to be Suspended to Treat Coronavirus why do they Exist in the First Place?

It should be pointed out the Trump Administration had to turn to the private sector to produce test kits because the CDC - a government agency - dropped the ball. Proof that the government does few things well, and the private sector outperforms them every time.

From the article:

In particular, Golden shares a video from GOP Rep. Dan Crenshaw who reviews our regulatory process, which prevented getting a coronavirus test out to people.

"It only took them a few days, and it only took them a few days to get it up to millions of tests,” Crenshaw said.

"That’s the situation we’re in now. They loosened those restrictions and our private industry has stepped up to the plate,” Crenshaw added.

Golden also notes that a report in The New York Times that quotes infectious disease expert Dr. Helen Y. Chu.

Chu tried to start coronavirus testing in Seattle when cases were first confirmed in January, but the government had the ability to stop her.

"As luck would have it, Dr. Chu had a way to monitor the region. For months, as part of a research project into the flu, she and a team of researchers had been collecting nasal swabs from residents experiencing symptoms throughout the Puget Sound region,” The Times reported.

Chu was told by the CDC that she needed approval from the Food and Drug Administration. Or, she could use the CDC’s test which "was completely busted,” Western Journal notes.

"But the F.D.A. could not offer the approval because the lab was not certified as a clinical laboratory under regulations established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a process that could take months,” The Times concluded.

Bureaucracy does little but restrain the productive and innovative. As Ronald Reagan famously stated, the most terrifying words in the English language are "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
