Scientists Baffled as Earth Spins Faster than Usual
And how does THAT affect climate? We are told we know all about the Earth's climate but can't explain this change in our rotational velocity.
The arrogance of establishmentarian science is staggering. E. Calvin Beisner observes:
Sorry, but that's a degree of precision that I find not credible granted the scale of the planet.
Carlos replies:
You'd be surprised at the level of precision that can be achieved today. Our GPS system is so precise that relativistic effects have to be accounted for to achieve accuracy and precision.
Calvin responds:
I understand the claim. I'm just not convinced that, in measuring the duration of the rotation of something the size of the Earth, and granted that its shape is always changing, our instruments are truly capable of that much precision. Consider what a mm of change in the distance from center of the Earth to the point on which one reference point is mounted could make in the measured rotation time.
Carlos responds:
Rotation is not concerned with distances or radii. Rotation is measured in angles per unit of time and then the measured angle translates to elapsed time between the b and c points, assuming a is the point where ab and ac meet.
Calvin again:
Yes, but change the radius at a given point but not consistently over the entire sphere, or move that point left or right along an arc, and there must be an effect on the apparent time elapsed for a rotation, right?
Carlos responds:
No, sorry.the radius or distances from the center do not change the time of arc rotation just the arc itself. It's only the angular rotation that determines time which is the same at any point on the radius.
Tim adds:
If an x force sped the Earth's rotation shouldn't we see that in the orbits of the satellites? I would think their orbits would increase slightly as a result.
Jim Conrad adds:
Could it be due to the increasing volume of ice at the poles?
Think of an ice skater spinning with her arms extended to the side. As she pulls them in, she spins faster.
