Just as a point of information, the stock market is not the economy. In fact, it is often counter to the economy. For instance, it is common for the stock market to rise when unemployment increases.

You are correct Bill. But it certainly is one measure of economic health. As you rightly point out it's not always in line with the economy though, especially where employment is concerned. But it is another indicator of economic solvency.
