My question - do you need good cellular internet coverage to be able to drive your Tesla? A surprise new Tesla issue might be a real problem for people in the middle of an emergency....

Any more reasons needed to conclude that electric cars are just "toys for the rich?" But the description of the way Teslas "start" is identical to most really-new gasoline-powered vehicles too. No key to insert into the dashboard, just carry your "fob" in your pocket. My Equinox works this way. No idea if Chevrolet is issuing software updates... This is a convenient system but I'm not sold on its security. And you have to start the car to operate accessories like the windows and wipers.

One wonders if these don't have built-in off switches so the government can shut down all travel if they choose.
I don't like to overcomplicate things. It leads to disaster.

I don't know about off-switches, but I do remember reading a number of years ago that any trips you navigate using GM's OnStar (included in all their cars) get reported to the gummint. (It might be worse; OnStar may be reporting all your movements.) Consequently, we don't use OnStar -- except for its periodic notifications of the car's health and any maintenance that needs to be done.

That's the hook they use; there are nice features that get you to love Big Brother. Sure it's nice to have a panic button and the like, but the cost is prohibitive (and I mean from a civil rights angle, not dollars.)
