Send 'em to Guyana!

Timothy Birdnow

Writing in Conservative HQ Doug Bandow argues for allowing Pakistani Christians to obtain refugee status in the United States.

From the article:

"here’s not much the U.S. government can do to ease Christians’ plight in Pakistan, other than press Islamabad to protect the lives, dignity, and liberties of all its peoples. But Washington could accept the few thousand Pakistanis stuck in Bangkok, essentially people without a country. Even the Trump administration should welcome religious minorities fleeing Islamist oppression."

[...]

"Washington should take in Pakistani Christians currently stuck in Bangkok. The number is quite small. Having been persecuted, they are among the best candidates for U.S. citizenship, almost certain to appreciate their new home. Opening America’s door, even only a crack, would help ease criticism of the administration for its ungenerous approach to refugees.

It is easy for Americans to forget how blessed they are. Washington should allow Pakistani Christians stuck in Thailand to make the U.S. their home, to replace the one they gave up in their search for respect, safety, and liberty." End excerpts.

I agree something must be done for these Christians, but letting them come here is problematic. First, unless we did it by surprise there would be a good chance that Muslim terrorists could infiltrate the refugees, and wind up being granted permanent residence in the u.S. Also, if the Trump Administration grants asylum to Christians the media and their Democrat allies will scream bloody murder, demanding we let Muslims come in as well. I disagree with your assertion that Trump will gain good will by such an act; rather, he will be pilloried as a Christian bigot. At this time in history I feel that any cracking of the door will be a wedge to allow more people to invade our country. We simply cannot afford to keep taking people. No matter how well-intended this would be the end result will be a widening of the border gap.

That said, we cannot afford to be hard-hearted about these poor people. So what can we do? I have a suggestion.

What is Pakistan? It is Muslim India. When India gained her independence she was split into a predominantly Hindu India and predominantly Muslim Pakistan (which was a divided country between East Pakistan - now Bengladesh - and West Pakistan.) Christians were divided between India and Pakistan. Sadly, the Islamic world does not tolerate religious minorities well, and the Christians are horribly persecuted in their homeland. Apparently India is unwilling to take these refugees (not sure why.)

In northern South America there is a country that is 39.8% east Indian. Guyana - the former British colony of British Guiana - is sparsely populated and has a sizable Indian population. In fact, they are the largest ethnic group in the country. And most of the Indians who live in Guyana are descendants of people from northern India, making them relatively close ethnically and culturally to the Pakistani refugees.

It seems to me it wouldn't be that difficult to get Guyana to admit these refugees. Granted, they will require financial assistance from abroad for a while, but the same holds true if they come to the U.S. I don't know why America always has to be the place where everyone who has a problem at home comes to settle. And of course they not only settle here but immediately begin suckling at the teat of the U.S. taxpayer and become good, dependable Democrats in the process.

It's time the rest of the world start carrying some of the burden. For far too long America has made it her responsibility to help everyone, and that cannot continue forever. We are so far in debt that we cannot ever pay what we owe now. There is no reason why a place like Guyana shouldn't take in these refugees - refugees who are culturally and ethnically related to a majority of their citizens anyway.

Why does it always have to be us?

The United States is the third most populous country on Earth. We have an immigrant population pushing sixty million, considerably more people than the total population of Canada. Do we really want to keep taking in huge numbers of people, until we become as populous as India or China? Both of those countries have struggled to provide for their enormous populations. We will be reaching Indo-Chinese levels when all the money runs out. What will we do then?

We've got to start scaling back our international commitments. One thing we can do is stop taking in every sad sack from every Third World country. It's time we put out the "no vacancy" sign. America can't keep absorbing the poor of the world indefinitely.

And, as long as we act as a safety valve for the world's poor, other countries will not take steps to improve conditions. Why should they? If immigration is such a great thing, then poorer countries should be clamoring for immigrants. They aren't, and that should tell us a great deal.

Immigrants CAN help a country grow and prosper, but they can also tear a nation down. America no longer believes in her cultural heritage and at this time bringing more non-Americans in is idiotic.
