Salena Zito finds doctors' "cure" for veterans/footballers concussions

Jack Kemp

An article by the great political writer who specializes in visiting small town America, often in Pennsylvania, Salena Zito writing in The Washington Examiner, states that doctors research has lead to the invention of a collar to keep more blood in the brain to counteract the effect of concussion causing traumas to the head. The article is long and explains the medical research in terms a layperson can understand, but I thought it needed a jump to quotes from the important concluding sentences written here up front. The full article can be found here. There is a photo of the collar in the article.

QUOTES FROM THE CONCLUSION...

Dubbed the Q-Collar after eight years of clinical trials and peer-reviewed medical trials in May, Q30 Innovations... submitted a request for de novo classification to the Food and Drug Administration, seeking authorization to market the Q-Collar in the United States.

... Tested over 5,000 times, it consistently applies approximately 1.5 pounds of pressure to the surface of the neck and doesn't move or slide on the neck.

While still unavailable in the U.S., it has been used by Canadian Football League players, and Q30 Innovations is also working with the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Activity to study whether U.S. service members at risk of traumatic brain injury should use the collar.

A Veterans Affairs study conducted by the Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center found that Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who suffered multiple traumatic brain injuries were about twice as likely to report suicidal thoughts than veterans who suffered one concussion or none at all.

1 Thanks Jack; that's a good news story indeed! Hopefully this works and will become a standard in the NFL as well as college leagues.
