For any who do not know, Sowell grew up in Harlem, dropped out of school, joined the marines and served during the Korean War. He received his undergraduate degree at Harvard in 1958, a Master's degree at Columbia University and by 1968 a Doctorate in Economics at the University of Chicago. He's the author of more than 30 books and texts.

Since 1980, Thomas Sowell has worked at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, where he presently serves as the Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow on Public Policy.

Below is a collection of 15 quotes from the great thinker and educator Thomas Sowell on the "vision of the political left” and the many defects, deficiencies and imperfections of that flawed vision.

What many do not know about Sowell is that he finished his first degree as a confirmed Marxist, because the entire education system pushes Marxism if not by name, and if not specifically, by continuously highlighting the problems, and not the benefits of a free market capitalist system.

Thus the university graduate with no life experiences is left with the belief there has to be a better way, and that way must be Marxism/ socialism.

If they have heard about the terrible outcomes of Marxist and socialist regimes in the past, they are told that's because it wasn't 'true socialism' and/or that it was because there were bad, authoritarian leaders.

They will advocate for 'democratic socialism'. As if the compulsory redistribution of wealth and income can be done without force. As if hard working people will willingly hand over their excess production or income to those who don't work as hard.

Sowell has said that he was a Marxist "during the decade of my 20s"; accordingly, one of his earliest professional publications was a sympathetic examination of Marxist thought vs. Marxist–Leninist practice. As he became an independent thinker, he realised how indoctrinated he had been.

Thomas Sowell was a very great thinker who understands how utterly tainted the education system and the intelligentsia is, and has spent his life battling against it.

It helped that he is black because he couldn't automatically be dismissed as a privileged white man.

This is well worth a read. But most people won't even get this far - which is why most people's grasp of current affairs is limited to headlines and 20 second grabs from TV stories. 😕

"1. That people on the political left have a certain set of opinions, just as people do in other parts of the ideological spectrum, is not surprising. What is surprising, however, is how often the opinions of those on the left are accompanied by hostility and even hatred.

2. Anyone who studies the history of ideas should notice how much more often people on the political left, more so than others, denigrate and demonize those who disagree with them — instead of answering their arguments.

11. The left is not necessarily aiming at totalitarianism . But their know-it-all mindset leads repeatedly and pervasively in that direction, even if by small steps, each of which might be called ‘micro-totalitarianism.’

12. What socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people—like themselves—need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat.

13. Although the big word on the left is ‘compassion,’ the big agenda on the left is dependency. The more people who are dependent on government handouts, the more votes the left can depend on for an ever-expanding welfare state.

14. The greatest moral claim of the political left is that they are for the masses in general and the poor in particular. That is also their greatest fraud. It even fools many leftists themselves.

15. No government of the left has done as much for the poor as capitalism has. Even when it comes to the redistribution of income, the left talks the talk but the free market walks the walk. What do the poor most need? They need to stop being poor. And how can that be done, on a mass scale, except by an economy that creates vastly more wealth? Yet the political left has long had a remarkable lack of interest in how wealth is created. As far as they are concerned, wealth exists somehow and the only interesting question is how to redistribute it."
