Putin Pox upon Oktoberfest

Timothy Birdnow

That wascwwy Putin is such a killjoy. Not content with invading Ukraine he now wants to cancel Oktoberfest in Germany this year!

Yes, the rampaging Russkie is forcing the Germans to stop making beer!

I suppose next he'll invade Switzerland to steal all the chocolate...

1 Good Heavens, Tim ... what brand of beer will we have to drink for Oktoberfest? Belgian? Austrian? Maybe Grolsch from the Netherlands...

2 I appreciate the information and advice you have shared.

3 There's always Canadian beer, eh. I guess we can drink Moosehead or Molson or Labatts.

I'll stick with my local stuff here.

BTW My brother Brian went to work for Anheuser Busch as a tour guide part time, and he gets cases of beer. Just got a bonus of four extra cases. He is starting to find it hard to figure out what to do with all the beer! And since it's A-B swill...

He promises me a case of Stella Artois. I am at minimum ambivalent. I can't really drink beer much anymore, and never much cared for Stella anyway.

4 Canadian beer and ale was popular in Buffalo when I was there, but that was before the explosion of microbreweries. I'd be tempted to say that "Canadian beer" is an oxymoron now.

5 I started drinking that when I first began to upgrade in my youth from Anheuser Busch swill. It's "crossover beer" - not quite as insipid as American lager but not exactly top notch stuff. Still, I liked it. I sometimes think about buying some, but then I can't really drink beer anymore anyway and so why bother hunting for it? I can go to any store here and buy Urban Chestnut or Schlafley's or any other local product off the shelf.

6 Umpteen years ago Martha and I were in a Canadian restaurant where I was sitting in with the band. There was a German exchange student there, and he remarked about the beer "this has no finish."

I can remember liking Labatt's IPA, but after real German beer began to be available in the area, I switched.

7 You were in a Canadian restaurant? I didn't know they had them; figured they just at flapjacks all the time.

He's right; Canadian beer lacks finish. But I suppose that's the point; it is "clean" as the Busch family would claim. Some like that - people who don't really like beer.

BTW I was heartbroken when A-B bought Becks. I haven't had it in a while but suspect it probably has that watery "clean" taste now. I want a beer to taste like a beer.

Speaking of A-B and how it ruined American beer, St. Louis is lousy with breweries now, but I don't really love any of them. They are big on wheat beers and other light "drinkable" beers, a hangover from the dominance of the Busch line. It's funny; my friend Dave (a huge beer afficianado) and I go over to the east side - the suburbs in Illinois - and there the brewpubs are much better. Why? Because A-B never got it's hooks into the area. They had their own brewery - the Stag Brewing Company. Stag is absolutely horrible, but it isn't watery or "drinkable". The folks over there developed a taste for more flavorful beer. Now the best breweries in the area are over in Illinois.

Dave has had beer all over the country. He plans trips based on breweries. He travels for work and always routs himself so he can visit breweries. He says the best he's been to are the ones in Illinois just across the river. The Stubborn German in Waterloo, Illinois, is the best brewery he's been to, he says.

At any rate Canadian beer is pleasant but hardly something you would seek out. Much like Canada itself.
