It looks like a fake news story.
Here's the full, long, story...
From the article:
espite several landmark legislative wins this year, and a better-than-expected relationship with President Donald Trump, Ryan has made it known to some of his closest confidants that this will be his final term as speaker. He consults a small crew of family, friends and staff for career advice, and is always cautious not to telegraph his political maneuvers. But the expectation of his impending departure has escaped the hushed confines of Ryan’s inner circle and permeated the upper-most echelons of the GOP. In recent interviews with three dozen people who know the speaker—fellow lawmakers, congressional and administration aides, conservative intellectuals and Republican lobbyists—not a single person believed Ryan will stay in Congress past 2018.:
End excerpt.

Dana Mathewson throws in his two cents: Keep in mind the political leanings of Politico.
I'll believe it when Ryan sends me personal confirmation.
The Politico story sounds not unlike the latest flap about Anderson Cooper's uncomplimentary tweet to the President. The one that CNN says was actually produced by a stranger who picked up Cooper's assistant's unlocked phone in the gym where the assistant had left it -- the assistant's phone can access Cooper's Twitter account, apparently. Todd Schnitt of Newsmax TV was all over it -- funny story, and about as credible as, well, anything else from CNN.
Fay Voshell responds:
Paul Ryan is aiming for the presidency. I hope he doesn't get it.
At the politically appropriate time, we will be reading something like this:
After long discussions with my wife and closest friends, I have reluctantly decided to continue on in Washington. My children also are firmly convinced I am needed in the nation's capital and should remain as a moderate voice in the midst of chaos.
I love my country, and am prepared to make any sacrifice in order to chart a balanced and nuanced course for the future.
Love,
Paul Ryan
THIS FROM TIM:
I think this article serves a couple of purposes. I think they are eager for Ryan to shaft his Conservative fellows with an Amnesty, and hope to lull the Freedom Caucus to sleep with this - especially the business about how Ryan is Trumps BFF. Talk about how Ryan really doesn't want the job but has no choice, and hope everyone lays off of him. I also wonder if, in this era, they don't have the goods on Ryan, say, a staffer making allegations. That is idle speculation and really has no bearing, but you never know. One thing you must keep in mind is when a mainstream media outlet like Politico offers up a puff piece on a Republican you should start to worry.
Bear in mind Ryan immediately threw Roy Moore under the bus - too quickly if you ask me.
I do believe Politico has every reason to strengthen Ryan's hand, as he has proven to be not the Conservative he had been advertised as when he first ran for Congress but is instead a swamp rat, a real consummate insder and moderate at best. Supporting him is the smart move for liberals, as they can "triangulate" to make the Freedom Caucus the bad guys as well as Trump. See, we're not against Republicans, just those crazy radical right wing nuts! Of course, like any Republican who gives them what they want, they will ride him until he's of no further service then discard him. Too many Republicans fall for that trick.
I think Fay is right; for his part, Pee Wee Ryan wants to be President Pee Wee. He refuses the crown as did Caesar, for public show. "Oh, I don''t want this, but I am too righteous a man to refuse if pressed into service!" If he really meant it he would state unequivocally as did William Tecumseh Sherman:
"I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected."
The man who eschews the job but accepts in the end wanted that job all along. And Rhyan is perfectly willing and able to toss half the country under the bus to get good press.
