One Moment of Glory

Timothy Birdnow

Here is a poem from a year or two ago about a very special night I had at the Ozark Hilton. I woke in the wee hours and had to evacuate my bowels. I hate doing that there; you have to go outside and sit on a toilet seat on top of cinder blocks. In the dark it's a menacing and dreadful thing. In this case it had been raining and was miserable out.

But I saw the most amazing sight!  The hollows were full of dense fog, and the stars jut blazed overhead! Fog covered my drive, too. It was as if I was on an island of land in a sea of nothing ness. I felt like the last man alive, but in a good way!

It was a profound experience.

So here she blows:

One Moment of Glory

A night as dark as the stomach of a cave
Tree bark dripping from the drizzling rain
I cower in my shack like a soul unsaved
Hiding from the gripping pain

Sleep comes by and by
the sweet release from life's great ache
deep comfort for my tired eye
Yet soon it ceased as I awake

The call of nature was at fault
Into the night I must trudge
and so my slumber I must halt
A flight of need though such a drudge

Into the night with lantern and paper
There in the trees kissed by rain from afar
An amazing sight appeared amid the vapor
An island in a sea of mist and stars!

The land floated there and the cabin and trees
an island cut off from time
an atoll of sand in a Sargasso sea
a highland amidst starry brine

The stars blazed in their heavens like lanterns of glory
The forest so dark and dripping with silence
The mists in the hollow like ghosts telling stories
My lantern so stark in the gripping suspense

The world at an end
was I the last human member?
Alone on that bend
in the warmth of December

A greater beauty have I never seen
Alone in a tiny world so vast
a sight so majestic and grand and keen
I prayed to God it would last and last

That moment was frozen in time forever
A gift meant just for me
A vision of Heaven was chosen to savor
sent to make my heart feel free

I am so very grateful
that I answered nature's call
to catch that moment so fateful
and gaze upon it all

For He was in the wispy mist
His loved poured down in showers
that place was blessed, Divinely kissed
but now drag on the hours

Such moments do not last for long
An instant then they're gone
so quickly passed so very fast
the mundane it lasts so long

I trudged back into my little shack
and laid my weary head
I nudged myself into my sack
and sadly went to bed..

1 Black culture dominates America, from our music to our sports. But heh!  They are invisible because the media says they are.
