On Collectivism

Chester McAteer

Collectivism, or herd mentality, can only lead to a meaningless life that is devoid of honest living, adventure, love, freedom, happiness, and fulfillment. Societal herds lose the ability to think as individuals, and envy and jealousy become the primary driving force of thought. This of course leads to a demand for equality where none is available or warranted, and due to this pathetic psychological state, all that is beautiful and good must be destroyed in order to make room for the mediocre community.

This is the state of America today. This country is made up of groups that require consensus of thought and actions, and this inevitably leads to a hatred for individual intellect and individual independence. The larger the mob, the less important the individual, as uniformity takes hold over all that is unique. Any individual that relinquishes his individuality in order to conform to the group has lost all. Once the herd mentality sets in, the consciousness of self disappears, leaving only weakness and confusion. It is in such a state that the crowd is worthless in every way, and mass despair is the result, as it tears down the exceptional.

Thank you for sharing your perspective on collectivism. While the article raises valid concerns about the potential pitfalls of herd mentality, it's important to appreciate the value of collective efforts and the diverse perspectives that contribute to a balanced and inclusive society. | Our Beauty Services

3 Lucie, humans are social animals but not collectivist critters. We flourish best in an atmosphere that cherishes and supports our individuality while at the same time promoting the group and using the individual talents of the group.  It is very much like, say, phosphorus or potassium; you need some but too much kils you.

Human history is replete with rising collectivism. Since group efforts accomplish much, it is thought more group efforts will accomplish even more. We saw this especially in the Bronze Age where societies were quite collectivist. But the problem is human beings aren't designed that way and the accompanying suppression of the individual for the greater good winds up leading to decay and eventual collapse of that society. There has to be a happy medium between anarchical structures and tyrannical collectivism.

Sadly we are past that now and in the throes of full collectivization. Like taking too much potassium, we are getting sick. (I know too; I had too much potassium at one point and checked into the hospital, thinking I was dying.)

We don't want a society that is full of anarchy. We are also seeing that now in the strange dichotomy that always accompanies collectivization (and indeed is a tool to attain collectivization; making society become so ungovernable that the people demand a collectivist dictatorship - that is why we say anarchists are leftists, btw.)

Just enough government to maintain the peace and to provide some basic services that could not be provided or not easily provided by the public is what is best. We are WAY past that now. Now we are a statist, collectivist entity that sounds shockingly similar to what Mussolini promoted (read The Doctrine of Fascism which can be easily downloaded online and is reasonably short.)
