No, Tariffs are Not the Problem in the Economy Newsmax
Timothy Birdnow
It has NOTHING TO DO WITH TARIFFS, you dimwit!
The unforced error of Trump’s tariff craze threatens GOP’s hopes to maintain their authority after the 2026 midterms
Trump's economic woes stem from fuel prices thanks to the war in Iran, continued high prices from the prior Biden inflation (we did not have DEFLATION), and that is pretty much that. The tariffs had nothing to do with any price woes. Oh, and the Federal Reserve refuses to drop interest rates, which would trigger economic growth, out of the Keynsian fear the economy will "overheat".
Author Charles Talarico, er, Gasparino is dumping this on tariffs which have brought a LOT of money into the treasury and helped force multiple foreign countries to cut more favorable deals with us.
This is just one more internationalist nitwit bemoaning the end of "free trade" which was free for everyone but the U.S.
And the American economy keeps getting better. GDP way up. Unemployment is down. All the numbers are moving in the right direction, including inflation which is as good as it ever was under Ronald Reagan, which was 4.68%.
Inflation under Carter averaged 9.85%, a little over eight for Ford, 4.95% under Biden (but the last two years were way higher), 4.81% under Bush Sr.
It was 2.46% under Trump's first administration, even with the Covid Pandemic jacking up prices. Clinton was 2.61% and the media told us how great the economy was booming.
So there is nothing unusual about the current inflation RATE. What we are hearing everyone bitch about is the price of homes and the cost of fuel. Homes tied in with the enormous influx of aliens under Biden, fuel ties in with two major wars fought in oil producing regions. None of it has anything to do with tariffs.
Gasparino goes on to regale us with tales of business owners he knows, with heresay evidence. But inflation is mainly a monetary problem and the Fed had expanded the money supply and we won't have deflation if we don't reduce the money supply and THAT has nothing to do with the President of the United States.
Tariffs do not cause inflation, nor do they cause economic slowdowns. The early '20's saw a sharp increase in tariffs and a reduction in the income tax and that unleashed the Roaring '20's, not the other way around. Those tariffs were actually put in place during a nasty recession. History shows tariffs have little to do with the economy one way or another. ONLY Smoot-Hawley which was scapegoated by the political class to end most tariffs and impose a heavy, progressive income tax, just like what Marx wanted. The income tax was only on the very top of all people prior to the Depression.
He points out inflation is currently 3.7% but wages are rising 3.6%. That will change soon enough; mostly it's the wars and the fact we are still trying to get rid of all the illegal aliens who came in and stole jobs and work for slave wages. But it won't last as the President is on the right track. But so what? Who established this target? It is completely arbitrary.
Yes, it means buying power is a little reduced but how is that the fault of tariffs? He never explains that - he just takes it on faith.
The fact is we are opening all sorts of new markets right now, and we're getting better deals on goods than we had been from our old "friends" like Canada.
Canada and Mexico did not "grow the U.S. economy through trade" but rather they scavenged off our economy. Much of our manufacturing went to Mexico. And Canada had high tariffs on our goods, meaning THEY were having a big party at our expense.
Tala, er, Gasparino just wrote something that sounds good, has lots of shibboleths, but in the end it's Pepsi Free, zero calories of substance. He cannot back up anything he's saying.

I would hazard the guess that the real problem is not the tariffs but rather the public's perception that it's the tariffs. The donkey party is yelling their heads off about tariffs and how they are supposedly making everything unaffordable even though they're not, and "a lie told often enough becomes the truth."

Sadly you are probably right Dana. People were told that lie often enough now many believe it..
The Progressives wanted a heavy income tax to control people and their behavior. They've long hated tariffs, which are a taxation allowed by the original Constitution precisely because it was NOT a direct tax on the public and that's the way the Founders wanted it. It was part of the Federalist system the Founders put in place, ergo it had to die.
