No Country for Old Men - After the EMP

Timothy Birdnow

A wise precaution in any case but isn't this interesting it's being prepared for now?

From the Epoch Times article:

Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed reporting on the issue published by Fox News Digital on Oct. 25.

"FORTRESS is strategic deterrence in action, ensuring our defenses are hardened, proactive, and ready,” Parnell said in an X post sharing the article on Oct. 25.

FORTRESS stands for Federal Operations for Resilience, Troop Resources, Energy, Supply, and Survivability.

Parnell said he created FORTRESS America "because we can no longer rely on two oceans to protect us.”

"That outdated assumption no longer reflects the threats we face,” he said.

"President [Donald] Trump and Secretary [Pete] Hegseth understand this and have already paved the way with Golden Dome and a renewed focus on the Western Hemisphere, including Greenland and Panama.

This should have been done years ago and is a testament to the unseriousness of the Biden and Obama Administrations respectively, and probably to the Bush Administration as well. We were sitting ducks for an infrastructure attack.

Years ago I warned on American Thinker about the dangers of an EMP attack on America. This was before Congress came out with their report (and before the novel One Second After, which I suspected I inspired, at least in part) and the U.S. government was still officially denying the EMP Effect existed and could take our the electric grid. Someone wrote in an angry letter (which AT published) denying there was such a thing and calling me a crank and a liberal. He claimed to be a person who was working on the Star Fish Prime tests. Interesting; the very next year Congress admitted everything.

At any rate this report by Congress has triggered a lot of concern and not just from crazy doomsdayers or political pundits but from the military itself, and little was being done to remedy the situation.

Equipment has to be hardened, by which we mean it needs to be sheltered by a Faraday Cage, which would direct the fast moving electrons to ground. When an atomic bomb detonates in the air it strips the atmosphere of charged particles which move in a fast-moving wave (called the Compton Effect). This wave is too fast for 90%conventional surge protection so it blows out all electronics. Also, an EMP comes in three "flavors" or surges with the E1 surge frying electronics but the E3 surge actually triggering current flow in geological formations, so the ground itself burns out our electric grid. Since everything has complex electronics now that would mean the end of our civilization.

Here is a simple article explaining what happens.

The Congressional report argued that within one year of the EMP attack 90% of our population would be dead. That is not a typo. They would die of starvation, of violence, of disease, of thirst and of exposure. It would make Mel Gibson's Road Warrior appear tame.

Other things can cause an EMP than a nuclear device. In 1859 there was a huge coronal mass ejection from the Sun that hit the Earth. Named after it's discoverer (who was watching at the time) it became known as the Carrington Event. It destroyed all the electronics of the day, which mostly consisted of a few telegraph lines. If Carrington were to hit today our whole civilization would die horribly. I believe asteroid strikes could trigger an EMP too.

Also, it's possible to make a much smaller EMP without a nuclear bomb.

That is just an EMP. There are other ways to wreck our defenses by taking out the grid. A nasty computer virus, for example.

We have to be prepared, and the military has to be prepared. Being in the military would be the best place to be if an EMP were to hit; they'd have stockpiled food. It might be MRE's, which taste like shit, as I'm given to understand, but who cares when everyone else is starving! But you will be first into combat with any nasties. And there will be plenty of nasties out there.

The rest of us will have to try to hide and hope for the best. Stockpiled food will last some time, if you are careful, but not that long. Everyone needs to learn how to farm and make sure they have seeds - and greenhouses. And a secure place to go. Ideally have some community which is largely self-sufficient already and capable of protecting itself. Guns are not optional. Neither is medicine and knowledge of what to do with it.

Make sure you have light, and what you need to make light work. Batteries are fine until they run out. Get rechargeable and an inverter so you can recharge them off a car battery. Stock up on oil lamps and kerosene. Be sure to have a fire starter and not just a lighter; ideally an old-fashioned flint and metal one would be ideal. And be prepared to run at any moment.

As for your place ideally in the mountains and with one way in and out - one way that can be blocked easily. Me, I always have my Ozark Hilton, but it really isn't defensible and it is not far from a small highway. That would probably be impassible thanks to the locals so if I got in there I may be o.k. - may be. But it is the best I could do. I bought it because it was close to resorts stuff - canoe rivers, a big Army Corps of Engineers lake, some decent hiking, even by Big Springs, the largest natural spring in the U.S. Lovely country. But my property would hide me but not protect me. But it's the best I can do if the SHTF. Oh, and I'd have to bring all my food down there if it does. Leave it there and it will be plundered by some local thieves. They already stole everything I left there.

And I'd have to be able to GET there; hard to do when all cars no longer work.

Anyway enough survivalism.

The point is it is interesting they are doing this now. But it's wise; with a possible widening of the Russo-Ukrainian war, and with the war with Iran, we had bloody well be ready for such an attack. If Iran could just get one nuclear bomb over Nebraska about five hundred miles up...

Within weeks everyone would be starving. Within months cannibalism would be common. Within a year only a few would be left; preppers who made the right decisions, survivalists who killed and ate people, and the military. Most of us would be gone and that includes me. This would be no country for old men. It wouldn't be a country for most young men either, nor women.

Let's hope and pray it never comes to that.
