Frankly, I don't see why Western Canada has stayed in the Dominion as long as they have. Canada is completely dominated by the leftists in Quebec and Ontario and the other provinces get short shrift.
From the article by Tyler Durden at Zerohedge:
A new bombshell report in Financial Times says that US officials have held recent talks with Canadian separatists seeking to break Alberta, Canada's oil-rich western province, away from Ottawa.
"Officials in the [US President] Donald Trump administration discussed loaning Alberta $500 million to break up Canada and make it the 51st state," one source told the FT.

If Alberta doesn't want to join the U.S. she can surely become an independent country; it has the oil resources to fund it and a willing partner in the United States.
As a nation Canada never made much sense. Underpopulated and underdeveloped it never did develop much in the way of a Canadian culture, but rather mimicked it's southern neighbor. July frist was chosen as Canada Day precisely because it coincided with America's independence day - no other reason. Everything Canadian, from their flag to their national anthem, was astroturfed, designed by committees.
And the people have nothing in common. French Canadians have an entirely different culture than do Anglos in the other provinces. And the French Canadians have threatened to secede and form their own country for decades, nut nobody in Canada has the wherewithal to actually do that. Now Albertans are thinking about doing it; they are sick of being restrained on the development of their oil and gas industry by Ottawa in the Holy Name of Climate.
Alberta would, of course, be a landlocked nation but with a friendly neighbor to the south rail lines and oil pipelines and whatnot will serve. I would encourage the folks in British Columbia to secede too but certainly the U.S. doesn't need another left wing left coast state entering our union.

Alberta contributes by far the lion's share of taxes to the Canadian economy, according to a graph I saw a week or so ago. Most, though not all, of the other provinces are in the red.

Which means Alberta would do just fine while the rest of Canada would perish as a country. So be it; they made their beds and now have to lie in them.
