You can't be a "cafeteria Catholic" and pick and choose what parts of the Faith you wish to embrace or reject. Biden and other so-called Catholic politicians do that on a regular basis.

What goes unsaid is Biden is excommunicated whether the Church issued a formal ban or not, and his receiving Holy Communion is a mortal sin on his soul.

Another point about all this; many on the Left are arguing that the Pope issued a ban on capital punishment and this is as serious as abortion,they claim, and so Republican Catholics who support capital punishment are as guilty as pro-abortion Democrats. That is not true.

Pope Francis wrote an encyclical which is NOT binding on Catholics; it is not a matter of Faith and Morals. Papal encyclicals are "magisterial teachings" but are not ex cathedra, meaning statements issued under papal infallibility. In other words, this is just Pope Francis opinion.

Not the case with abortion, which has a long pedigree of opposition and Pope Benedict gave it the highest reprove as a matter of Faith and Morals. The two are in no way equal.
