"Must We Always Be Tolerant?"

Selwyn Duke

"Must We All Be Always Tolerant?” asks commentator Hugh Fitzgerald. Writing at Jihad Watch, what inspired his question was the reaction of British lawmaker David Amess’s family to his October 15 murder.

Amess, 69, was stabbed 17 times by a Somali Muslim while meeting with constituents in a Methodist church in Leigh-on-Sea in southern England, in what authorities consider a terrorist incident. In response to this, Amess’s family said in a statement released via London police, "Whatever one’s race, religious or political beliefs, be tolerant and try to understand"....

Tim adds:

It used to be called being a chump - or a patsy. Someone every so tolerant as that was laughed at as a fool. Now it's our main cultural trait. Naive fools do not last long in the real world. BTW Why is tolerance never extended to Conservatives or Christians?

1 That's because they deem us to be "haters." Saves them from having to get to really know one of us.

I might have known some actual haters in my youth, but I can't put a name to any of them. Yeah, there were guys in high school who could have been better, but high school isn't the real world. And I must say that even the liberals in my life -- including the one old bat who loves to parade her "atheism" -- don't rate the term, and wouldn't call me that. It goes without saying that I don't know a single Conservative (or Christian, though they're generally one and the same) who can legitimately be called a hater.

2 Nope. I do know a few lefties who could be so characterized, but even they are few.

Hater is a convenient term. It demonizes without any evidence.

5 Hate is disagreeing with a liberal, as Rush used to say.

6 Good one! William F. Buckley used to say that liberals profess to consider all sides of an argument but then are dumbstruck to learn that there are any sides but their own. This has been going on for awhile, it would seem.
