Musk v. Bannon

Timothy Birdnow

The big fight over H1B Visas heats up.

Bannon Calls H1B Support a Dark Contempt of Americans Just Hours Before Trump Publicly Supports Program

Musk told people to "f*** themselves in the face" if they don't agree with him and Bannon replied by calling him a man-child and sneering at Musk for claiming he was going to go to war over this issue.

We don't need this right now, but I suppose it was inevitable; the Trump coalition is a hodge-podge of differing views and this kind of coalition is hard to hold together. Now we are seeing the first cracks appear.

BTW I've never trusted Elon Musk. He made his money by gaming the system and taking money from taxpayers. Smart business? Sure but it bespeaks a worldview that is quite different from my own.

Of course that is equally true of Trump himself, a man I opposed when he first ran. He won me over by his willingness to fight and his generally good common sense and that he actually tried to keep his campaign promises. Trump is not a Conservative in the traditional sense, but he is the best we can do in this era. But here is one example of where Trump is wrong.

Trump was quite sheepish about it though, so I suspect he'd rather avoid this whole fight, and rightly so.

In the final analysis we simply have too many immigrants in this country - both legal and illegal. We need at least fifty years, and probably longer, to assimilate the ones we have. And we don't need any characters around to give the joint atmosphere! (Sorry; couldn't help quoting Sheldon Leonard just after Christmas.) In point of fact all this immigration does is make Americans just give up on certain fields, and eventually most white collar fields as they know they will be passed over for these jobs in favor of the favored H1B workers.

1 "the Trump coalition is a hodge-podge of differing views" Actually, I think this is one of its best features. Compare that to the lock step idiocy of the Democrats. Good ideas come from debates and independent thinking.

2 I agree, Bill; debate is good, and both of these guys are worthy men to have in our camp. I think it's unfortunate we've heard too little of Bannon because of the time he spent in the hoosegow (which he shouldn't have). On this particular matter I'm on his side, too.

3 Bill I agree. It gives our side vitality. They are all lockstep and that is why they had no choice in this last election (and is no small part of why they lost). However it makes it harder for our side to move stuff. As they say, it's like herding  cats. Our coalition is more fragile and can fall apart more easily (and always has in times gone by). The Media and the Democrats have known this and used it to their advantage in bygone days. They gin up these internecine fights to try to fracture our coalition. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But it does give the Democrats a distinct advantage as far as moving their agenda as everyone goes along or else.

Frankly,, there should be no contest; America should long ago have rejected the Democrats. But this is still nip and tuck because the Democratts are far more organized than are we and it is this organization, coupled with a "free press" that is entirely in the tank for them, that keeps this close.

4 Some real irony here, because 30 years ago the situation was reversed.. Republicans were in lockstep ("the "New American Century") and Democrats could not get anything done. The joke was that if you had twenty Democrats in a room you would get 35 different opinions. Remember how Democrats finally got control of Congress in 2008 and were going to end the war in Iraq and eliminate the "Bush tax cuts"? Remember how instead of ending the war they got the "surge" instead and never even touched the tax cuts?
