More on the Amazon Fires

Timothy Birdnow

Another point to ponder about the Amazon fires; Brazil and the Amazon aren't the only places on fire - there are fires in Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay right now as well. In other words, it is fire season.

And here is a Live Science article about the fires - and how they won't affect atmospheric oxygen levels. From the article:

The oft-repeated claim that the Amazon rainforest produces 20% of our planet's oxygen is based on a misunderstanding. In fact nearly all of Earth's breathable oxygen originated in the oceans, and there is enough of it to last for millions of years. There are many reasons to be appalled by this year's Amazon fires, but depleting Earth's oxygen supply is not one of them.

Nearly all free oxygen in the air is produced by plants through photosynthesis. About one-third of land photosynthesis occurs in tropical forests, the largest of which is located in the Amazon Basin.

But virtually all of the oxygen produced by photosynthesis each year is consumed by living organisms and fires. Trees constantly shed dead leaves, twigs, roots and other litter, which feeds a rich ecosystem of organisms, mostly insects and microbes. The microbes consume oxygen in that process.

Forest plants produce lots of oxygen, and forest microbes consume a lot of oxygen. As a result, net production of oxygen by forests — and indeed, all land plants — is very close to zero.

Reader Bill H. had a great comment:

When we first began having to empty our water bottles in airports, CBS News ran a film clip of an airplane blowing up to demonstrate what the new terrorist weapon (liquid explosive) could do. We now know, of course, that there was never any liquid explosive, but I knew at the time that the film clip was made in Ethiopia some 12 years earlier when terrorists blew up a captured airliner.
More recently, all networks ran a film clip an "air strike" on a refugee camp in Syria which it labelled a "war crime." It clearly had not involved any bombs, but was the results of camp fires spreading during a wind storm.
NBC last night ran film clips of the Brazilian "aftermath of the rain forest burning."None of the trees were more than about 15' tall and none were more than 8" in diameter. Some of the trees may have been three years old, but none were older than that. Most of the aerial shots were not even forests at all, but were grassland.

Interesting how the media keeps running video clips which demonstrate visually that the story it is telling is false.

1 It's Trump's fault. No, it's Hillary's fault.
No, it's AOC's fault, because she wants everything to be Green Energy. Well, I'm making at least as much sense as she does, most of the time. But it's Happy Hour here at Chez Mathewson, and my martini hasn't kicked in yet, so...

2 Well, then it's YOUR fault, Dana; you really should have written after a few more cocktails...

3 Problem there, Tim, is that sometimes after a few more cocktails I start to make more sense, and that can be dangerous. The other problem is that at my age, I am having more and more problems trying to remember the words I want to use -- cocktail or no cocktail. It's why I don't write original articles.

Now, take AOC (please!): She always sounds as if she's had at least five martinis. I really wonder what kind of a bartender she really was.
