Mizzou Going Belly-Up

The University of Missouri Columbia continues it's long, terrible slide into oblivion.
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "The University of Missouri will cut 12 graduate programs and introduce a new interdisciplinary college in 2019 as part of an overhaul of academic programs announced Wednesday.
The announcement follows nearly a year of work by a 17-person university committee that reviewed graduate programs and recommended investment and collaboration opportunities. The committee recommended cutting twice as many graduate programs as the 12 announced by university Chancellor Alexander Cartwright.
The decision is part of a systemwide review of programs begun last year to address budget and enrollment concerns."

Mizzou has been in freefall ever since they allowed the chaos of Black Lives Matter protests to engulf the campus. Parents feared for the safety of their children (particularly after a professor named Melissa Glick called for "muscle" to beat up a student at a protest) and it became apparent that Mizzou was more interested in promoting "social justice" and political radicalism than educating students. The result has been decreasing enrollment.
But the University of Missouri system refuses to acknowledge their fault in the matter.
Here is the kicker:
"The College of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies would replace the current Office of Graduate Studies. The college would be home to interdisciplinary academic programs and it would provide administrative support to the university’s traditional graduate programs.
Cartwright and Interim Provost Jim Spain met with deans and the campus community to discuss the task force’s recommendations from January, which led to support for the concept of a college for interdisciplinary and graduate studies. Such courses of study combine multiple disciplines that essentially allow students to design their own specialized majors."

Essentially this is a sop to the Left, to further erode the traditional disciplines by mixing them in with the nonsense. You will have history along with the bogus "american studies" or "women's studies" departments. This so they can appease the radicals who demanded the University introduce new radical programs into the curriculum.
Among the demands of Concerned Students 1950, the radicals who set Mizzou ablaze:
IV. We demand that the University of Missouri creates and enforces comprehensive racial awareness and inclusion curriculum throughout all campus departments and units, mandatory for all students, faculty, staff, and administration. This curriculum must be vetted, maintained, and overseen by a board comprised of students, staff, and faculty of color.
V. We demand that by the academic year 2017-2018, the University of Missouri increases the percentage of black faculty and staff campus-wide to 10%.
VI. We demand that the University of Missouri composes a strategic 10 year plan by May 1, 2016 that will increase retention rates for marginalized students, sustain diversity curriculum and training, and promote a more safe and inclusive campus.
VII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding and resources for the University of Missouri Counseling Center for the purpose of hiring additional mental health professionals -- particularly those of color, boosting mental health outreach and programming across campus, increasing campus-Âwide awareness and visibility of the counseling center, and reducing lengthy wait times for prospective clients.
VIII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding, resources, and personnel for the social justices centers on campus for the purpose of hiring additional professionals, particularly those of color, boosting outreach and programming across campus, and increasing campus-Âwide awareness and visibility.

And they also demanded then University President Tim Wolfe stand before them, acknowledge his "white privilege" and then be terminated.
Now please notice how these demands force the university to adapt and expand curriculum. It's expensive to do that, so Mizzou is dismantling older, traditional programs to meet their "obligations" to the protesters.
Funny; I thought a university was a provider of a service and students had a choice about going there. Why were they making "demands" of the school and why was the school kowtowing to those demands? It is rather like going to McDonalds and demanding they bake you a pizza.
Mizzou has nobody but itself to blame. Cowards die a thousand deaths, and appeasers can never satisfy those they appease. In the end, political correctness is destroying the University of Missouri system.
