Everyone is talking about the knife-in-back op-ed by Mitt the Twit Romney and so they should; Romney has made a fool of himself before even taking the oath of office.
I figured I'd weigh in with a few observations.
First, Mr. Romney states:
As to the abandomnemt of allies, are we allies forever, even when it makes no sense? We were allies of the Soviets during WWII, too, and then fought a cold war against them. We were allies of Hosni Mubarak Until Obama abandoned him. Ditto Muammar Khadaffi, who became a very good ally of ours after Reagan bombed him. For that matter, Saddam Hussein was a good ally of ours until George H.W. Bush turned against him. Allies are not forever - nor should they be.
Uh, a sucker is always the last to know, by definition. We borrow money from China to give to everybody around the world. If they lips fit...
Milksop Romney waxed poetic about the Insiders Trump appointed:
His early appointments of Rex Tillerson, Jeff Sessions, Nikki Haley, Gary Cohn, H.R. McMaster, Kelly and Mattis were encouraging
End excerpt.
But these were a betrayal by Trump, not a good thing. Trump promised to drain the swamp then appointed these slithering reptilians, people who permanently inhabit the halls of power. If anything Trump owes America an apology for foisting these guys off on us. Of course, this was to get the GOOP insiders (like Romney) on board with him.
Romney reall loses it here:
To a great degree, a presidency shapes the public character of the nation. A president should unite us and inspire us to follow "our better angels.†A president should demonstrate the essential qualities of honesty and integrity, and elevate the national discourse with comity and mutual respect. As a nation, we have been blessed with presidents who have called on the greatness of the American spirit. With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable. And it is in this province where the incumbent’s shortfall has been most glaring.
End excerpt.
Oh, really MItt?
First, a President is the head of the executive branch of government, and is not the Pope. This notion that the President is some sort of object of worship is a fairly modern one; read what was said of Presidents in the nineteenth century. I want a servant, not a master, and not a roll model.
And what of this "better angels" business? Romney never said this about his Democratic opponent when he ran for President, despite the fact that Mr. Obama insulted our side repeatedly, and worse, he used the force of law against us. The tone of discourse degraded under Obama, and who was it that led that particular tone? Romney had little to say then, but now he's a man of absolute integrity. I seem to remember Obama calling me and my side "bitter clingers"; there's mutual respect for you.
I would point out that the national discourse degenerated under George W. Bush, too, and even his father. Both RINO Republicans - the sort of Presidents Mr. Romney professes to admire - refused to fight back against critics and wound up with worse discourse. See, the Democrats couldn't get a rise out of Bush, despite calling him a war criminal, a racist, a Hitler, and a monster. So with each unanswered insult they hunted for even more extreme ones. It was Bush who gave us this current toxic atmosphere, despite his mealy-mouthed mildness. And at the end of his term of office he said he couldn't understand why his extended hand was rejected.
Bullies always hate people who won't fight back. Most people do.
Romney is strangely eager to attack his own side, but won't defend his friends when the enemy attacks.
Also, I would ask Mr. Romney; if the Democrats wanted to, say, round up Jewish Americans into camps would Mr. Trump or any president be obliged to "elevate the national discourse"? Is "comity" more important than doing what is right? Are Republicans duty bound to committ hari-kari in order to avoid offending the media and the Democrats? That is essentially what Romney is saying.
Mittless continues:
The world needs American leadership, and it is in America’s interest to provide it. A world led by authoritarian regimes is a world — and an America — with less prosperity, less freedom, less peace.
To reassume our leadership in world politics, we must repair failings in our politics at home. That project begins, of course, with the highest office once again acting to inspire and unite us.
End excerpt.
Sorry Mitt, but this decline in the old Warsaw Block countries and in ASia began before the Trump Presidency, and were a direct result of internationalist policies YOUR buddies advocated. The whole international framework was aimed at weakening America and reducing her influence. Well, nature abhorrs a vacuum. Our withdrawl from leadership under Obama caused this. Had you not bumbled the election perhaps you could have helped prevent that, but I doubt it. You wold have followed the same bankrupt course followed by Obama and the Bush family.
Mitt continues:
America is strongest when our arms are linked with other nations. We want a unified and strong Europe, not a disintegrating union. We want stable relationships with the nations of Asia that strengthen our mutual security and prosperity.
End excerpt.
First, there is no proof of that assertion. Yes, military coalitions tend to be stronger than single nations - provided they don't fracture through infighting. But larger is not always better and many of oru post-war institutions (like NATO) no longer really serve our itnerests. There comes a time when it is better to part friends than stay in a bad marriage. America has increasingly little in common with the European Frankenstein's monster known as the E.U., and we have been paying far more than our share of NATO dues and whatnot. NATO expansion, I might add, has poisoned our relations with Russia, which could have been brought into the Democratic fold had we not been so abusive toward them.
Romney concludes:
More importantly, noble instincts live in the hearts of Americans. The people of this great land will eschew the politics of anger and fear if they are summoned to the responsibility by leaders in homes, in churches, in schools, in businesses, in government — who raise our sights and respect the dignity of every child of God — the ideal that is the essence of America.
End excerpt.
What came first, the chicken or the egg? America was great because America was good, but can the same be said today? Progressivism has poisoned the nation, and the young people are owned lock, stock, and barrell by the left. This ending shows what a myopic fool Romney really is; no amount of moral leadership is going to bring America away from the brink of anger and fear, because America has moved away from that same God Mr. Romney invokes here at the end of his essay. We are fighting to return the nation on that path - they are fighting to eliminate God and His People. This always was a war, despite what people like Romney have always thought, and it is now a war in the open, rather than a guerilla fight. We don't need a monk or priest in the Presidency, we need a George Patton. We don't need George McClellan but U.S. Grant. There is a season for everything, and we are in the season for a warrior, not a diplomat.
And don't talk to me about noble instincts; a man who understands nobility is first loyal, and you are clearly not. Also, a noble man is not one who is so duplicitous, nor is he so great a flip-flopper as you have been, Milhouse.
America was born in a revolution. Apparently Mitt Romney doesn't know that.
