"Visiting the library remains the most common cultural activity
Americans engage in, by far. The average 10.5 trips to the library U.S.
adults report taking in 2019 exceeds their participation in eight other
common leisure activities. Americans attend live music or theatrical
events and visit national or historic parks roughly four times a year
on average and visit museums and gambling casinos 2.5 times annually.
Trips to amusement or theme parks (1.5) and zoos (.9) are the least
common activities among this list.â€
The results of the Gallup poll have been broken down in a range of
different ways, all of which you can peruse at your leisure, but two of
the more interesting (though unsurprising) findings are that women
report visiting the library nearly twice as frequently as men do, and
that libraries are visited most by adults in low-income households and
least by adults in high-income households.
I'm surprised; people have computers for that. But it IS free and you can get a novel or magazine or whatnot. Much better than the movies, which keeps getting more and more expensive and now features commercials as well.
And where else do you find a hot librarian with glasses and a wild streak under her mild exterior? Come on guys, admit it; we've all fantasized about a librarian at some point. Never did that about a popcorn girl.

Our local library always has a bunch of cars in the parking lot; at least half the customers are mothers with at least one kid in tow, and they go to the automated check-out machines with armfuls of books.

Well, speaking of hot librarians, just rent a copy of the movie "The Music Man" and drool over Shirley Jones as the librarian Marian Paroo. She was hot enough to snare the cynical salesman Harold Hill. Splendid musical with splendid music and acting, great story. And if you want more fun, look up Meredith Willson's autobiographical book about the writing and producing of the show: "But He Doesn't Know the Territory." Fantastic writing; it'll make you want to see the movie (or the show) again.
Jack Kemp sent us a copy for Christmas a couple of years or so ago, and Martha bought copies to give to the pertinent people at Wayzata High School to use to lobby them to do the show at the school. Problem is, in high school it's darn near impossible to find a kid who can do Harold Hill.
