Lamps, Mao Jackets, and Paul Krugman

Eliminating choices is what tyrants do. Remember the old Soviet Union? If you wanted to buy something (and it was in stock - a rarity) you had to buy exactly what your neighbors had. If you wanted a lamp there was only one style of lamp. Otherwise you would have inequality in the society, and we can't have that! So the Soviets made only one kind of lamp, one kind of pants, one kind of shirt. Everyone dressed the same, used the same stuff, and depression and alcoholism ran rampant in a colorless, regimented, restricted world.
Remember that tre chic Mao Jacket? Everyone looked like they were on the same bowling team. You had to wear that in Mao's Communist China or face the wrath of the Cultural Revolution (which was surprisingly similar to modern American cancel culture.)

Next. I suppose Krugman's going to write a book (it'll have to be a tome) detailing all the "right" choices we should make: which make and model of car to buy, which toothpaste, television set, which cut of steak and how to cook it -- or more likely, why not to eat steak. Hey Krugman! C'mon, Man, tell us what we should be choosing. And we'll tell you just where to put it, OK?
